Content Provider: Dr. Carolyn Osiek
Need help: CLI Help Desk (helpdesk@christianleaders.net)
Enroll me Overview: This course surveys the historical data available concerning women in early Christianity, starting from the ministry of Jesus through the first several centuries of the Catholic church. This course will help them see the Biblical role of women in ministry for a man. For women called to ministry, this course will give confidence in their calling to ministry.
What was it like to be a woman of faith in the time of Jesus and the early church? What historical evidence do we have concerning women's leadership in various forms? Dr. Carol Osiek leads this class. She has her Ph.D. from Harvard Divinity School. She has been on the writing team of two critically acclaimed books on women in early Christianity. One book is A Women's Place, and the other book is Ordained Women in the Early Church. While it is not possible to offer the texts of these books, CLI students may want to purchase these books.
Course Outcomes:
- Acquire historical intelligence about the role of women in early Christianity.
- Grow in confidence for ministry inspired by the lives and work of women in early Christianity.
- Develop an early Christianity sociological framework for women and family relationships that the Gospel of Jesus Christ impacted.
- Be confirmed in your calling for minister and ordination to ministry.
Assignments:
- Read the assigned materials. Reading assignments are used with permission from the Christian History Institute and Wikipedia.

- Take the online quiz for each unit. You will have 75 minutes to answer 20 multiple-choice questions for each quiz. Once a quiz starts, you must finish it and can't retake it. While taking the quiz, you may use your notes and refer to articles and other materials. Tip: First, answer all the questions you know. Then try to look up answers to questions you don't know. When you have entered an answer for every question, submit the quiz for grading before the 75-minute limit.

CLI Student Catherine Camelo
"My name is Catherine Camelo, I´m 33 years-old and I´ve been happily married to Robert for the last 13 years, we have one 11-year-old daughter, Mary Anne, and I´m expecting another baby girl. We are from Colombia, however we moved to Mexico on July 2012, where God called me to homeschool my beautiful daughter so I quit my job to follow that call. I believe the time in Mexico was the best time as a Christian, because, even though, I gave my life to Jesus on 2005, I didn´t live as a Christian, I mean, if you call yourself a Christian, you must have the character of Christ and how can you do that if you don´t really know Jesus through His Word? Therefore, it wasn’t until I started to attend church more often, take discipleships and doing my daily devotionals, that I really fall in Love with my Savior. As I started to know more about Jesus, I felt the need to serve at my church, because if I was receiving so much grace, I needed to share it with everyone else, so I began to serve in the kids´ ministry, usher ministry, and I had the opportunity to serve as a leader in the homeschool ministry. However, just a month ago, the Lord called us to move to Canada, as soon as we got here, we found a church where we have the opportunity to serve as usher, but I have the need to have a formal biblical education.
The calling to the ministry came when I started to know more about Jesus few years ago, but when I got to Canada, I was able to see that there was a thirst for knowing more about God´s Word, but I would like to be trained to be able to teach it with more confidence and more diligently, especially to Women. Unfortunately, tt´s easy for women to follow the world's flow and teachings regarding the role of women in the society and marriage, which often opposed to what God teaches us in His Word, therefore, I want to lead women to His Word so they can find Joy in the role God has given us."
Please pray for Catherine and her ministry!
