🎙️ Welcome Back
We're continuing our discussion on strategic level spiritual warfare. This session is especially exciting for me as a lover of history. We’ll explore how some historical figures engaged in spiritual warfare at the highest levels.

🔍 Levels of Demonic Opposition
Remember, we’ve discussed how spiritual warfare operates at different levels: general demons (opposing individuals), princes (like the Prince of Persia and Greece), and leaders (Satan himself).

📖 Biblical Example: Paul in Ephesus

🏛️ The Setting: Ephesus and Its Deity
In Scripture, one clear example unfolds in Ephesus. Paul arrives and confronts the dominant spiritual force there: Diana (or Artemis), a fertility goddess with a temple that was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

📢 Paul’s Approach: Preaching and Miracles
Paul began his ministry in the synagogue, but resistance from Jewish leaders forced him out. Despite this, Paul continued ministering, and supernatural events followed.

⚔️ A Clash of Powers
Paul’s work in Ephesus directly challenged the regional demonic power, undermining the influence of Artemis. This confrontation exemplifies strategic spiritual warfare.

📖 Daily Teaching and Miracles in Ephesus
In Acts 19, we read that Paul took the disciples with him and held daily discussions in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. This continued for two years, resulting in all Jews and Greeks in the province of Asia hearing the Word of the Lord. 🌍

✨ Extraordinary Miracles
God did extraordinary miracles through Paul:

  • Even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched Paul were taken to the sick.

  • Illnesses were cured, and evil spirits left those affected. 👏

💥 The Sons of Sceva Incident
Some Jewish exorcists tried to invoke Jesus' name over the demon-possessed, saying:
"In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out."
Seven sons of Sceva were doing this, but the evil spirit mocked them:
"Jesus, I know, and Paul, I know. But who are you?"
The man with the evil spirit overpowered them, beating them so severely they fled naked and bleeding. 🏃‍♂️💨

😨 Fear and Repentance in Ephesus
When this became known, the people of Ephesus were filled with fear and held the name of the Lord Jesus in high honor. 🙌 Many believers confessed their sorcery, bringing their scrolls and burning them publicly. The value of these items totaled about 50,000 drachmas – some estimate this to be around $4 million in today’s terms. 💰🔥

📚 The Hall of Tyrannus and the Temple of Diana
Paul’s ministry occurred near the heart of Artemis worship in Ephesus. He met daily in the Hall of Tyrannus, a venue believed to be adjacent to the grand Library of Ephesus—a place renowned for its extensive collection of scrolls, second only to the Library of Alexandria. 📚🏛️

Not far from there stood the Temple of Diana (Artemis), one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. This stunning structure boasted numerous columns and housed a sacred meteorite, believed to have descended from heaven, symbolizing divine favor. 🌠🕍

🔥 High-Level Spiritual Warfare

As the gospel spread, more and more people recognized the spiritual battle they were part of. Many, including sorcerers, realized they were on the wrong side of the battle. This is spiritual warfare at its highest levels—transforming lives and breaking strongholds. 🌍💥

🕊️ John the Apostle and Ephesus

Though Paul never entered the Temple of Artemis, tradition holds that John the Apostle, along with Jesus' mother, moved to Ephesus.
📖 At the crucifixion, Jesus entrusted his mother to John:
“John, this is now your mother; Mother, this is now your son.”
🕍 The tradition says that John prayed in the Temple of Artemis, asking God to destroy it. An earthquake split the altar, sparking a people movement toward Jesus.
📜 This tradition isn’t directly in the Bible but is rooted in church history.

🏛️ Historical Examples of Strategic Warfare

Several early church leaders confronted territorial spirits and principalities in strategic-level spiritual warfare.

📚 Justin Martyr (2nd Century)

In his Dialogue with Trypho, Justin affirmed that:

  • A principality of darkness ruled over Damascus.

  • A territorial spirit controlled Arabia.
    He referred to Isaiah’s prophecy:
“He shall take the power of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria,”
suggesting this foretold Christ’s victory over the evil demon in Damascus at His birth. 🌟
💡 Fun fact: Some believe the three wise men came from that region!

✨ Gregory the Wonderworker (3rd Century)

A renowned missionary of the early church, Gregory the Wonderworker was famous for his supernatural acts and bold confrontation with territorial spirits. ⚔️🌿

✨ Gregory the Wonderworker: Signs and Miracles

Gregory was so known for supernatural signs and wonders that he earned the name Gregory the Wonderworker. 🌟

👤 First Convert: An Occult Practitioner

His first convert was someone deeply involved in the occult.
🔮 This person had a history of evil spiritual transactions with a demon who occupied the temple dedicated to Apollo.
👺 This demon was well-known in the region and was said to have been invited into the temple by a pagan priest—an invitation that gave him the right to be there.

😱 Gregory's Encounter with the Demon

Gregory was actually sleeping in the temple one night when the demon attacked him. 🌙⚔️

💥 Gregory’s Victory Over the Demon

Gregory engaged in battle and, drawing on his experience in spiritual warfare, invoked the full power of God. 💪
The demon was evicted from the temple and later appeared to the pagan priest, confessing that it could never return without Gregory’s permission.
When the priest saw this evidence of God’s power, he became a Christian, and a people movement toward faith followed. 🙌

🌲 St. Martin of Tours: The Demon in the Tree

Martin of Tours, a missionary to France, sought to invade demonic strongholds at pagan shrines. In one village, he discovered that a territorial spirit was tied to a massive pine tree. 🌳
Martin began chopping down the tree, but the locals challenged him to stand where the tree would fall, to test the power of his God. 💥
As the tree cracked and fell, Martin raised his hand and rebuked the demon-infested tree in Jesus’ name. ✋
According to his biographer, the tree spun and fell in the opposite direction, nearly crushing the spectators, and salvation came to that region. 🙏

🏠 Demons in Places: Cleansing a Home

Sometimes demons are tied not just to people but to places. 👻
A young man involved in the occult left a house, and a new family experienced unexplained coldness in his former room.
Called to cleanse the house, the speaker claimed the space for Jesus, commanding the demon to leave. The house was cleansed. 🕊️

⚡ St. Boniface and the Thor Tree

In the 8th century, St. Boniface faced a territorial spirit named Thor in Hesse, Germany. 🌩️
Thor’s central power point was an ancient oak tree where the people gathered for animistic worship. 🌳
Armed only with an axe, Boniface issued a public challenge to Thor and began chopping down the sacred tree, launching a spiritual battle for the salvation of the people. ⚔️

🌪️ The Power Encounter: Boniface and the Thor Tree

A huge crowd gathered expecting Thor’s power to destroy Boniface. Instead, a supernatural burst of wind brought the tree crashing down, shattering it into four pieces. 🌬️🌲
The crowd immediately recognized the hand of the true God, humiliating Thor and breaking his hold on the territory.
📚 Kenneth Scott Latourette, a well-known historian, noted:
“The pagan bystanders who had been cursing the desecrator were convinced of the power of the new faith.”
The people witnessed decisive evidence of God’s superior might and soon experienced a people movement, rejecting Thor and turning to Christ. 🙌

🔥 Saint Martin of Tours: Humbling the Darkness

Martin of Tours continued spreading the gospel by invading demonic territory, including pagan shrines, and humiliating entrenched principalities of darkness. 💪
(Though there was a repetition of the pine tree story, Martin’s impact continued in many other regions.)

🌍 Testimonies of Spiritual Warfare in Mission Fields

Today, we still hear stories of such power encounters, especially in areas where pagan forces dominate. 🌿
A missionary report from the Philippines shared testimonies of encounters with the demonic world, leading many to Christ.
A similar story came from a Haiti mission trip. Voodoo—a powerful force—has long dominated the island. During the trip, we heard drums echoing from the hills, and our missionary guide warned us, “We can’t be here when it’s dark.”
If faced with that situation today, I might say, “Maybe it’s time for a power encounter to show Jesus’ authority over the voodoo spirits controlling this region.” 🔥

🗺️ Looking Ahead: Engaging Strategic Level Warfare

Spiritual warfare—especially strategic level warfare—often connects to Christ’s mission of making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). 🌏✝️
I’m actively engaged in prayer with others for areas like Roquetas in Spain and Docientis, places dominated by slavery and spiritual darkness.
In the next session, we’ll discuss:

  • How to engage in strategic level warfare, and

  • What you can do to confront strongholds in your area.

🙏 Join me next time as we continue to explore strategic spiritual warfare. See you then! 😊
