Bible Study: The Weapon of Command - Going on Offense Like Jesus
🙌 Welcome Back to the Spiritual Warfare Series
This is Session 26 of 36 in our series on Spiritual Warfare. So far, we’ve explored the defensive armor of God, and we’ve begun turning to our offensive weapons—the sword of the Spirit and prayer.
Now, we turn to a powerful but often overlooked offensive weapon: the weapon of command. We will see how Jesus handled direct encounters with demons—not by retreating, but by exercising spiritual authority.
📖 Jesus Confronts Evil – The Capernaum Encounter (Mark 1:21–27)
Jesus begins His public ministry in Capernaum, teaching in the synagogue. As He teaches with authority, He is interrupted:
"Just then, a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an impure spirit cried out, 'What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!'"
Jesus doesn’t argue. He doesn’t panic. He uses a command:
“Be quiet! Come out of him!”
The result? The demon obeys. The people are amazed.
Key Observations:
Jesus ministered in His own authority.
The demon recognized Jesus' identity.
Jesus responded boldly and directly.
This happened in the synagogue—among religious people!
🌊 The Gerasene Demoniac – Mark 5:1–20
Jesus crosses the Sea of Galilee and meets a man possessed by a legion of demons. The man lives among tombs, isolated, tormented, and uncontrollable. When Jesus arrives:
"When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees... and shouted, 'What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? Don’t torture me!'"
Jesus issues a command:
"Come out of this man, you impure spirit!"
The demons beg to be sent into pigs. Jesus gives permission. The demons leave, the man is freed, and the town is shaken.
Lessons from This Encounter:
Demons fear Jesus and recognize His lordship.
Jesus asks the demon its name: "Legion."
Jesus exercises total authority over many demons.
The man is restored and sent on mission.
💡 The Power of Jesus’ Command
In both Capernaum and Gerasa:
Jesus does not ask the Father to intervene.
He commands with divine authority.
Demons must obey.
"At the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth." — Philippians 2:10
Jesus gave His followers this same authority:
"I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy." — Luke 10:19
🔥 Mark 9:14–29 – The Disciples Fail
After the Transfiguration, a father brings his demonized son to the other disciples. They fail to cast it out. Jesus rebukes them:
"You unbelieving generation... Bring the boy to me."
Jesus commands the demon:
“You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”
Later, the disciples ask why they failed. Jesus says:
“This kind can come out only by prayer [and fasting].”
Takeaways:
Authority requires preparation.
Prayer aligns us with God’s will and power.
Some strongholds require deep spiritual readiness.
🗝️ The Weapon of Command – What It Means for Us
As believers:
We operate in Jesus’ name.
We are not powerless spectators—we are Spirit-empowered warriors.
We don’t cast out demons in our name but in Jesus' authority.
"In my name they will drive out demons." — Mark 16:17
When confronting evil:
Discern whether it’s demonic.
Speak with clarity and boldness.
Command the enemy to leave in Jesus’ name.
Do not fear. You are not alone.
🙏 Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, Thank You that You have all authority in heaven and on earth. You have defeated the enemy at the Cross. Teach us to walk in that victory. Help us to recognize spiritual battles and respond not in fear, but in faith. Train us to speak boldly with Your authority when confronting evil. Make us aware, courageous, and prayerful. In Your powerful name, Amen.
