Video Transcript: Board Reorganization
Hi everybody. Welcome back. This is Dr Hunt again. We're still in the midst of trying to figure out how to develop a ministry board. I know you've already figured it out by now. We've gone through phases 1, 2, 3, and 4, and now we're in Phase Five, and Phase Five is talking about reorganization. In Phase four, we talked about sustainability, in other words, continuing to look inward and outward to make sure and evaluate, to see where we are and see how we can get better. That was phase four sustainability, not only sustainability, but how do we continue to have success moving forward as a board? So number five, number five is reorganization, and let me just say a few things about that before I put up the slide. Reorganization could come when you find yourself not able, I shouldn't say not able, when you find yourself at a crossroads in your ministry where you realize that maybe you don't have the capability, the resources to continue the ministry as it is, and you might need to join with another ministry group, or you might need to hire additional staff, or you might need to reorganize your ministry in order to better serve your new vision or mission or values the opportunities that have come your way. So it's a time reorganization. You talked about sustainability, and you find out looking at and evaluating your organization, evaluating your board, you find out that maybe we need to reorganize. So let's take a look at that particular slide. What do you do when you realize that you need to reorganize? And I talked about some of the very various reasons that you might want to reorganize, but when you do that, you need to be cognizant of the people who work for the organization of the things that you've accomplished. In other words, this is a time not only for change, not only for reorganizing certain segments of your ministry, it's also a time for celebration. It's time to look back and see what you've accomplished, see how far you've gone in this ministry. And so when you find yourself at the need for reorganizing, or even when you get to a certain point where the ministry has served its purpose and you might need to disestablish the ministry. It's the same thing you need to do these, these four things. You need to make sure that you recognize, that you inform the staff in a responsible way. In other words, be clear about why you're doing things, why you're reorganizing, why you're, if you're, if you decided that the ministry has run its course, why you're ending it, and make sure that you divine or talk about what's going to happen next. Because if you're reorganizing, some people may be going to new positions, some people may be leaving. And so you need to and you need to understand, need to understand or communicate what's going to happen, so everybody is clear, so everybody understands what is going on. So that's the responsibility of the board to make sure that that's done. And so the next one is really what I talked about before, is honor the current and past board members, folks who have made key contributions and staff. In other words, celebrate one another. Celebrate what you've done. You know, you remember, there's some people who were very important. Maybe they've already gone and moved on, but you celebrate those,
those goals, those milestones that you have. Because really, when you do ministry, it's not really, it's not so much about what you're trying to accomplish. It's also about what you leave behind. If you're leaving something behind that blesses the community, that blesses the people, that gives others encouragement for ministry work, that's a wonderful thing, and you need to acknowledge those things as well, so you reflect on the organization's history and see how far you've come, and look at the lessons that you learned going forward. And then lastly, from a legal standpoint, you need to ensure, if you're dissolving your ministry, you need to make sure that you know you're assessed, you know the properties that you own, the resources, the minutes, the legal documents, make sure that this is disposed of in the right manner. So those are things that even if you reorganize, you may have to, it may be that if it's going to if you're merging with another. Ministry, those documents become property of that ministry. So you have to be cognizant of those things. So reorganization is is a is a difficult phase, and it's one that's unsettling, particularly for staff, and so the board needs to be very cognizant and very sensitive to Phase Five reorganization. I hope that helps, and God bless you. We still have some more to go, so continue to join me the next time for our next part of how to develop a ministry board. God bless you and God keep you until we meet again.
