š The Identity and Credibility of a Seasonal Chaplain
š A Calling, Not a Costume
Henry:
Weāre back in the Holiday or Christmas Chaplain course, and weāre digging into our next section here.
The first thing to realize is that this is a calling.
There are people, Abby, who just have that Christmas passion.
Abby:
Definitely. Maybe Christmas meant a lot to them as a childā¦
Or maybe it was a hard seasonāand now they feel called to bring hope to others who struggle during this time.
š§āš Saint Nicholas: The First Christmas Chaplain?
Henry:
A Christmas chaplain might not wear a collarāwe donāt really get into that at Christian Leaders Alliance. But whether or not itās formal, we embrace volunteer ordinations.
Did you know Saint Nicholas, born in 270 AD, served the poor and gave gifts? He was even present at the Council of Nicaea.
So in a way, Saint Nicholas is the first Christmas chaplain.
Abby:
Thatās fascinating! The Churchās story around Santa Claus traces back to a real man of faith.
š Eyes to See What Others Overlook
Abby:
As you're taking this training, consider how you are uniquely positioned to fill emotional and spiritual gaps during the holidays.
Thereās that long list of 50 ideas for what a Christmas Chaplain can doāand all of them meet real needs.
For example:
Hosting a service for those grieving the loss of a loved one.
Praying over each individual during a difficult holiday.
š A Spirit-Led Calling
Henry:
This is a Holy Spirit callingāa calling to be a minister of presence.
It's not about institutional recognitionāitās about Godās commission.
Abby:
This isnāt necessarily a traditional church service. Itās incarnationalābringing the presence of Christ into all sorts of places.
š Warm Intentions Arenāt Enough ā Training Matters
Abby:
While this is a Spirit-led calling, credibility and training are crucial.
Thatās why we put this course together. We also offer other chaplaincy classes like:
Chaplaincy Foundations
Additional specialized training
We need Spirit-filled, trustworthy, and equipped chaplains. People will come to you with deep theological questionsāand while you donāt need all the answers, you need to be prepared.
š ļø CLI Training Empowers Real Ministry
Henry:
Thatās why we offer free ministry training at Christian Leaders Institute.
Itās practical, accessible, and gets you ready to actually do ministry.
This Christmas Chaplain role is a toe-in-the-waterāa way to step into ministry and see where God takes you.
Abby:
Maybe people already call you the Christmas elf because you spread joy at nursing homes or drop off gifts. But remember:
You are a minister, not a decoration.
Your words and actions carry spiritual weight.
You are an ambassador of Christ, carrying the message of reconciliation.
š Theology and Emotional Intelligence
Abby:
These symbolic roles require both:
Theological grounding
Emotional intelligence
An ambassador carries Christās authority into every encounter.
Even though "Christmas chaplain" is a symbolic title, itās a big theological deal, especially when people are hungry for truth during the holidays.
āļø A Student of the Season
Being grounded in Scripture and understanding the meaning of Christmas matters.
Itās about the IncarnationāGod entering into human brokenness
Itās about redemption through Christās life, death, and resurrection
That creates evangelistic opportunityāespecially for:
People who have walked away from their faith
People whoāve never heard the Gospel
Henry:
This army of chaplains will be stewards of the brand.
We will not let the world forget:
The reason for the season is Jesus Christ.
š£ Turning Conversation into Gospel Opportunity
Christ came as a baby to walk with humanity.
Emmanuel: God with us.
That theological truth transforms seasonal conversations into gospel opportunities.
Before each conversation, pray:
āGod, let me be your ambassador in this moment.ā
Abby:
Even the word āchaplainā sparks interest.
Someone may ask,
āWhat is a Christmas Chaplain?ā
You can say:
āWe love Christmasābut we love the reason for the season even more!ā
šŖ Chaplaincy Is Invitation, Not Imposition
Henry:
A chaplain isnāt a door-knocking evangelist.
Youāre not pushing your way into someoneās world.
Abby:
You are a safe space for people to approach.
Donāt intimidate. Be open.
Youāll need both:
Emotional intelligence
Spiritual readiness
š„ The Emotional Layers of the Season
Abby:
Holidays bring up deep grief for many.
Weāll talk more in our Blue Christmas Training, but for nowāknow this:
Some people are experiencing their first Christmas without a loved one.
š Donāt Add Pain Through Misguided Comfort
Abby:
Iām reminded of a course we did with Pastor Dr. Bruce Ballast.
He shared how sometimes, well-meaning people visit someone whoās dying of cancer and say:
āHereās how you should handle this.ā
āGodās got a plan!ā
Instead of comfort, these words created more paināeven anger at God.
What people really need is someone to:
Come alongside them
Love them
Be present
š Loving Your Neighbor Well
Abby:
As chaplains, we get to live out the Great Commandment:
Love the Lord your God with all your heartā¦
And love your neighbor as yourself.
This is pastoral care:
Emotional awareness
Spirit-led discernment
Donāt assume you need to quote a Bible verse to fix things.
Instead, ask:
āWould you like me to share a verse with you?ā
š¢ Allow Space for Lament
Abby:
Not everyone is grateful at Christmas.
And thatās okay.
Scripture is full of Psalms of lament.
Letās be chaplains who:
Join people in their sorrow
Point them gently to Christ
Avoid pressure or guilt
š± Foster Resilience and Adaptive Presence
Ministry presence isnāt about performance.
Itās about:
Listening
Adapting
Being present
š§° Core Skills of a Christmas Chaplain (Part 2)
š Active Listening
Abby:
Active listening is essential in this ministry of presence. You can sit with someone all day, but unless you're truly understanding them, youāre missing the heart of the ministry.
One of the most powerful gifts you can offer someone is this:
"I remember what you told me last week, and Iāve been praying for you. Is there any update?"
Thatās active listening. Thatās relational ministry.
š§ Ethics, Boundaries, and Trauma-Informed Presence
Henry:
As we continue, weāre going to dig deeper into:
Ministry ethics
Trauma-informed presence
Boundaries and self-care for sustainable ministry
Prayer in public places
Pastoral comfort without preaching
These core skills build both confidence and ethical integrity.
Ethical integrity includes:
Understanding confidentiality
Being that safe space where someone can open their soul to God
š§± Healthy Boundaries for Long-Term Ministry
Abby:
Healthy boundaries safeguard your calling and prevent burnout.
Chaplains often step into emotionally heavy spaces.
Without strong boundaries, burnout is inevitable.
As chaplains, we're relationally presentābut we must also be emotionally and spiritually resilient.
š Ministry of Presence, Connection, and Prayer
Henry:
This is a presence-connection-prayer ministry.
Youāre there to embody Christās love in person.
To help people feel seen and valued.
Abby:
Santa Claus has become a cultural symbol of ābeing noticedāābut think about the spiritual roots of that in St. Nicholas, the original giver to the poor.
People crave being noticed.
As a chaplain, youāre not impersonally delivering gifts.
Youāre saying something far more meaningful:
āGod notices you.ā
š£ Walking in Calling and Character
This program forms:
Your identity
Your credibility
Your mission
Itās a Spirit-led ministry grounded in:
Scripture
Theology
Skill
This is not just a seasonal hobby. It is a sacred assignmentāespecially vital during the holidays.
𧬠Character + Skill = Impact
Henry:
Hereās the pattern Iāve noticed over a lifetime in ministry:
Character sustains calling
Preparation deepens impact
When character is paired with skill development, even for a volunteer, it leads to clarity of mission and long-term effectiveness.
You become:
A lover of Jesus
A lifelong learner
A serious and compassionate minister
š Final Challenge: Be the Light
Closing Encouragement:
Be a student of the Gospel.
Be a bearer of Christ.
Serve as a listener, a servant, a voice of peace.
Let your light shine before others.
The Ministry Sciences approach affirms the integration of:
Calling
Competence
Compassion
Be faithful.
Redeem seasonal moments into eternal impacts.
You.
