Hi, I am Haley, a Christian Leaders Institute presenter. In Topic 3, we focus on trust, confidentiality, and ethics—because trust is the currency of chaplaincy, and confidentiality is one of the main reasons officers will talk to you.

1) Why confidentiality builds trust

In police culture, people carry heavy stories and often keep them contained. When an officer talks to a chaplain, they are not looking for an investigator. They are looking for a safe person—someone who can hold a burden without turning it into a report.

Your calm presence communicates:

  • “You are not alone.”

  • “You can speak without being judged.”

  • “I will respect your dignity.”

2) What you can promise

You can promise respect, discretion, and policy alignment.

Here is field language that helps:

  • “I’ll treat what you share with care and discretion.”

  • “If something has to be shared for safety or policy reasons, I will tell you that clearly.”

  • “I’m here as chaplain support—not command, not IA, not therapy.”

3) What you cannot promise

You cannot promise absolute secrecy in every situation, because chaplains operate under:

  • agency policies,

  • mandatory reporting laws,

  • safety protocols,

  • and sometimes specific chaplain program rules.

So you say it early, gently, and clearly:

  • “Before you share details, I want to be clear about my limits. If someone is in immediate danger, or if policy requires reporting, I can’t hold that privately.”

4) Simple confidentiality boundary steps

Use this quick pattern:

  1. Clarify role: “I’m chaplain support.”

  2. Name limits: “I can’t keep threats or immediate harm private.”

  3. Invite safe sharing: “You can speak in general terms if you’re unsure.”

  4. Stay steady: no shock, no interrogation, no moral lecture.

What Not to Do

  • Do not say, “You can tell me anything—this stays with me no matter what.”

  • Do not act surprised or alarmed.

  • Do not ask investigative questions like “What exactly did you do?” or “Who else knows?”

  • Do not imply you can “handle it” without policy.

A short Scripture anchor (WEB)

Scripture calls leaders to integrity and careful speech:
“Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak truth each one with his neighbor.” (Ephesians 4:25, WEB)
Truth includes truth about your role and limits.

Close

Confidentiality is not a magic promise. It is a disciplined practice: clear limits, careful speech, and steady presence. When you handle confidentiality with clarity, you protect the officer, the agency, and your witness.
