Family: Husband (Miguel) present, visibly exhausted and frustrated
Staff: RN (Jordan), charge nurse, on-call resident physician, social worker available by consult
Chaplain: Volunteer hospital chaplain on evening rounds (you)
Presenting issue: RN Jordan pulls you aside and says, âCan you go in there and talk her down? She wonât stop panicking. Sheâs demanding to leave, and I donât have time. Youâre good with peopleâcan you handle it?â
This is a common pressure moment: staff are stressed, the patient is distressed, and the chaplain is seen as âthe calm fixer.â

Chaplain Response Plan (Step-by-Step, Field-Ready)
Step 1: Clarify the request with the nurse (in a respectful way)
You say:
âIâm glad to help with supportive presence, but I canât replace clinical assessment. Is Carla medically stable right now? Has the provider been updated?â
Then ask:
âIs there a specific concernâpain, confusion, or threats of leavingâso we can loop in the right person?â
This signals teamwork and protects safety.
Step 2: Ask what the nurse wants you to accomplish (keep it realistic)
You say:
âI can go in, introduce myself, listen, and help her feel less alone. If sheâs asking medical questions or wants to leave, Iâll help her communicate those concerns to you. Does that work?â
Now youâve defined your lane clearly.
Step 3: Enter the room with consent and a calming posture
You enter slowly. Sit if appropriate.
You say:
âHi, Iâm the chaplain. Iâm here to support you. Is it okay if I sit with you for a minute?â
Then a grounding line:
âYouâre not alone right now.â
Youâre not doing therapy. Youâre offering presence.
Step 4: Name what you observe and invite one simple sentence
Carla is crying and says, âI canât breathe. Iâm going to die. I need to leave now!â
You respond:
âThis feels terrifying. Thank you for telling me.â
âIn one sentenceâwhat feels most scary right now?â
This helps her move from chaotic panic to a single expressed fear.
Step 5: Keep medical questions in the medical lane
If she says, âMy pain medicine isnât working,â you say:
âThatâs important for your nurse and doctor to know. Would you like me to help you tell Jordan exactly what youâre feeling?â
Then you can step out briefly and tell the nurse:
âShe reports uncontrolled pain and intense fear. She wants to talk about leaving. Can you come in when you can, and should we update the provider?â
You do not interpret the pain. You relay concerns.
Step 6: Offer consent-based spiritual support (only if welcomed)
If Carla asks, âCan you pray? Iâm scared,â you say:
âYes. Would you like a short prayer in Jesusâ name, or a more general prayer for peace?â
If she consents, pray briefly:
âGod, be near to Carla. Give her peace and steady her breathing. Give the team wisdom and comfort her heart. Amen.â
If she declines prayer:
âThank you for telling me. I can stay quietly for a moment.â
Step 7: Support the husband without recruiting him into conflict
Miguel snaps at the nurse later, âNo one cares!â
You can say to Miguel:
âYou look exhausted. This is a lot.â
âLetâs focus on one clear question for the nurse so you can get support.â
Do not become an ally against staff. Validate emotion and redirect to collaboration.
Step 8: Close the visit with clear next steps
You say:
âIâm going to let your nurse know what you shared so you can get the right help.â
âWould you like me to check back later?â
Then you follow unit norms.
