🎥 Video 9D Transcript: What Not to Do in Multi-Faith Workplace Chaplaincy

Hi, I am Haley, a Christian Leaders Institute presenter.
In this video, we will look at what not to do in multi-faith workplace chaplaincy.
Many chaplain mistakes do not come from bad motives. They come from bad timing, bad assumptions, pressure, or lack of awareness. In a diverse workplace, a chaplain can care deeply and still lose trust if they do not serve wisely.
First, do not assume people share your background. Spiritual language, religious symbols, or even a Christian label do not tell you the whole story. Begin with respectful questions such as, “How would you like me to support you?” or “Would prayer be welcome?”
Second, do not move too fast with explicit spiritual language. People at work may be tired, embarrassed, or under pressure. If you rush into strong religious statements, you may shut them down. Timing is part of love.
Third, do not turn difference into tension. If someone follows another faith, or no faith at all, do not become defensive or argumentative. Care for the person with dignity. Do not turn a care moment into a debate.
Fourth, do not use pain as an opening for pressure. Grief, fear, or stress do not remove the need for consent. Christian care should feel safe, honest, and respectful.
Fifth, do not make public spaces awkward. Avoid loud prayers or deeply personal questions where others can hear. Protect privacy and dignity.
Sixth, do not pretend to know what you do not know. If someone shares a religious custom or belief you do not understand, be humble. It is better to listen honestly than to fake expertise.
Seventh, do not become so cautious that you hide your faith completely. The goal is not silence or pressure. The goal is respectful, permission-based Christian care. If prayer is welcomed, pray. If Scripture is requested, share it. If someone says no, honor that no.
The simple summary is this: do not assume, rush, pressure, debate, embarrass, fake knowledge, or hide your faith. Instead, be calm, clear, respectful, and permission-based.
A good workplace chaplain learns how to be both faithful and safe. That kind of presence builds lasting trust.
