🎥 Video 11A Transcript: Chaplaincy Parish Ministry from a Legacy Church

Hi, I am Henry Reyenga, a Christian Leaders Institute presenter.

In this video, we are going to talk about chaplaincy parish ministry from a legacy church.

A legacy church may wonder, “How can we serve our community again?” Sometimes the answer begins with presence.

Chaplaincy parish ministry is a defined ministry assignment where trained Christian leaders bring prayerful presence, encouragement, Scripture when appropriate, listening, and care into real-life settings. This may include homes, hospitals, nursing homes, workplaces, community events, schools where permitted, first responder settings, funeral homes, or places where people are lonely, grieving, or disconnected.

A chaplaincy parish does not mean the church is trying to control the community. It means the church is accepting a humble assignment to serve.

Many legacy churches already have people who know how to show up. They visit the sick. They sit with widows. They attend funerals. They bring meals. They pray quietly. They notice who is missing. These are not small things. These are signs of Christlike ministry.

But in revitalization, these natural instincts need training and structure.

A chaplaincy parish can help a church move from random care to accountable care. The church can ask: Who are we called to serve? Who will be trained? Who provides oversight? What are our boundaries? When do we refer? How do we protect confidentiality? How do we represent Christ with humility?

For example, a small rural church may develop a visitation team for elderly members and community residents. Another church may train chaplains to serve grieving families after funerals. Another may develop a community presence ministry for local events or crisis situations.

A common mistake is to think chaplaincy is only for professionals in hospitals or the military. Professional chaplains matter deeply. But trained volunteer and part-time chaplains can also serve faithfully in local ministry settings, within proper boundaries and oversight.

Christian Leaders Institute can help train these leaders. Christian Leaders Alliance can provide appropriate chaplaincy recognition or ordination pathways where fitting.

A legacy church becomes renewed when it stops asking only, “Who will come to us?” and begins asking, “Where are hurting people, and who can we train to go with care?”

Chaplaincy parish ministry helps a church become present again.

And faithful presence can open doors for gospel renewal.
