🎥 Video 1A Transcript: Welcome to Having Ministry Genogram Conversations

Hi, I am Haley, a Christian Leaders Institute presenter.

Welcome to Having Ministry Genogram Conversations. This course is about helping people understand where they came from so they can more faithfully discern who God is calling them to become.

A genogram is a kind of family map. It can show parents, grandparents, siblings, marriages, divorces, losses, repeated patterns, strengths, struggles, wounds, blessings, and missing models. But in this course, we are not treating a genogram as a therapy tool, a diagnostic tool, or a way to blame families.

We are learning to use a genogram as a formation map.

That means we ask: What shaped this person? What was passed down? What was missing? What patterns are still affecting life today? What blessings should be remembered? What wounds need care? What new faithful pattern may Christ be inviting this person to begin?

Some family maps reveal anger. Some reveal silence. Some reveal addiction, criticism, abandonment, fear, shame, or emotional distance. But family maps can also reveal prayer, courage, hospitality, hard work, resilience, generosity, humor, faithfulness, creativity, and hidden grace.

A ministry genogram conversation helps someone see both.

This matters because many people are trying to grow spiritually while carrying family patterns they have never named. A person may want to be more patient, but anger was normal in the home. A person may want to lead, but no one in the family ever modeled leadership. A person may feel called to ministry, but spiritual leadership was never practiced around the dinner table. A person may want a healthy marriage, but never saw apology, affection, or repair.

A genogram conversation can help bring clarity. But clarity must be handled carefully.

In this course, we will learn to ask permission, listen with humility, protect dignity, avoid pushing painful disclosure, pray only by permission, share Scripture with wisdom, and know when a conversation requires referral or additional support.

You are not being trained to be a therapist. You are being trained to become a wiser Christian leader in sensitive ministry conversations.

The goal is not to explain everything about a person’s life. The goal is to help people see family formation with honesty and grace, so they can take faithful next steps in Christ.

Family history shapes people, but it does not have the final word. Christ redeems. The Spirit forms new patterns. The church becomes a family of discipleship and hope. And image-bearers can become cycle-breakers and blessing-builders.

Welcome to the course.
