🎥 Video 8A Transcript: Genograms for Calling, Leadership, Work, and Holy Possibility

Hi, I am Haley, a Christian Leaders Institute presenter.

A ministry genogram conversation is not only useful when someone is facing pain. It can also help someone discern calling, leadership, work, creativity, education, ministry, and holy possibility.

Many people carry silent assumptions from their family story. Some grew up in homes where leadership was modeled with wisdom and courage. Others never saw healthy leadership at all. Some were taught to work hard but never to dream. Some were taught to survive but not to create. Some were encouraged to serve God boldly. Others were told, directly or indirectly, “People like us do not do things like that.”

A genogram can help a person see those patterns with honesty and grace.

For example, a student may feel called to start a Soul Center, lead a Bible study, pursue ordination, return to school, start a ministry, or build a business. But when they look at their family map, they realize no one in their family line modeled that kind of step. Their hesitation may not be laziness. It may be the weight of an unseen family imagination.

This is where the ministry leader must be careful. We are not using the genogram to push people into ambition. We are not saying every desire is a calling. We are not flattering people into action. We are helping them ask wise questions before God.

A helpful question might be, “When you look at your family story, where do you see examples of work, service, leadership, courage, learning, sacrifice, or creativity?” Another question might be, “Where do you notice something missing that you now long to begin?”

That question can be powerful. A missing model is not a missing capacity. Just because no one modeled something does not mean God cannot form it in this person’s life.

The Christian leader listens for both burdens and blessings. Maybe the person inherited fear, but also perseverance. Maybe no one modeled ministry leadership, but someone modeled prayer. Maybe the family lacked education, but showed hard work. Maybe there was no healthy business model, but there was courage in hardship.

The goal is not to erase the family story. The goal is to discern how Christ may be redeeming it.

In calling conversations, move slowly. Ask permission. Protect dignity. Do not overstate what you see. Do not say, “God told me you must do this.” Instead, help the person notice patterns, pray, seek counsel, test their motives, and take one faithful next step.

A ministry genogram can become a window of holy possibility. It can help someone say, “This was not modeled for me, but by God’s grace, it may begin with me.”
