One afternoon, she meets with Jordan, a young professional who recently began attending community events hosted by the church. Jordan does not identify as Christian. He says he is âspiritual, but not religious.â
Jordan is friendly, thoughtful, and emotionally honest. He tells Maya, âI am trying to become my highest self. Iâve spent too many years living small. I am done with toxic energy. I am manifesting a better life. I think the universe is finally telling me to choose myself.â
Maya listens carefully. Jordan continues.
âI do not really believe in organized religion. I think most religions are just control systems. But I like Jesus. He seemed like someone who lived fully aligned with his higher self. I want that kind of energy.â
Maya feels several things at once. She appreciates Jordanâs desire to grow. She hears his pain. She notices his hunger for healing, identity, and purpose. But she also recognizes that Jordan is using Christian words and spiritual-but-not-religious words in very different ways.
