📝 Worksheet 1.4: My First Gratitude Discernment Exercise

Course: Christian Gratitude Growth
Topic 1: What Is Christian Gratitude Growth?
Purpose: This worksheet helps students begin practicing Gratitude EyesGratitude Attitude, and Christian Gratitude Discernment in a simple, honest, biblical way.

Opening Thought

Christian gratitude is not pretending.

It is not saying life is easy when it is not.

It is not forcing cheerful words over real pain.

Christian gratitude is learning to bring your whole life before God and ask:

“Lord, help me see my life as you designed it.”

This first exercise will help you notice grace without denying hardship.

Take your time. Be honest. You do not need perfect answers.

Part 1: One Honest Sentence

Write one honest sentence about how you are coming into this course.

You may feel hopeful, tired, curious, resistant, thankful, numb, sad, angry, or unsure.

Right now, I feel:

Part 2: What Is Hard to See with Gratitude?

Name one area of your life where gratitude is difficult.

This may involve your body, past, family, marriage, singleness, work, money, health, regret, grief, disappointment, aging, calling, or relationship with God.

One part of my life that is hard to see with gratitude is:

Why is this hard for me?

Part 3: Gratitude Eyes — Noticing One Grace

Now ask God to help you notice one grace in or near that difficult area.

Do not force it.

Do not exaggerate it.

Do not pretend everything is fixed.

Just name one grace.

Examples:

God helped me endure.
Someone checked on me.
I still have a chance to grow.
I learned something painful but important.
I have not been abandoned.
My life still has purpose.
I can ask for help.
God is still present.

One grace I can notice is:

Part 4: Gratitude Attitude — Interpreting with Grace

Gratitude Attitude asks: “How am I interpreting my life?”

Sometimes our thoughts become harsh, hopeless, or incomplete.

Complete the sentences below.

A harsh or discouraging thought I sometimes rehearse is:

A more truthful sentence before God could be:

Examples:

Instead of: “Nothing good is happening in my life.”
Try: “Lord, help me notice the grace I have missed.”

Instead of: “I am only my failure.”
Try: “I have failed, but God is still forming me.”

Instead of: “My life is useless.”
Try: “My life still matters to God.”

Instead of: “I should be stronger by now.”
Try: “God is patient with my growth.”

Part 5: Self-Gratitude Before God

Self-gratitude is not pride.

It is thanking God for the life he gave you.

Complete at least three of these sentences.

Lord, thank you that I am still here because:

Lord, thank you for one part of my body that helps me live:

Lord, thank you for one gift, ability, or strength you have placed in me:

Lord, thank you for one way I have grown:

Lord, thank you for one hardship you helped me survive:

Lord, thank you that my story is not over because:

Part 6: Embodied Gratitude

God created human beings as embodied souls. Your body is not separate from your spiritual life. Your body is part of your life before God.

Write one sentence of gratitude for your embodied life.

This may be simple.

Examples:

Lord, thank you for breath today.
Lord, thank you that my hands can serve.
Lord, thank you for the strength I still have.
Lord, help me receive my life as a man before you.
Lord, help me receive my life as a woman before you.
Lord, help me care for my body without shame or pride.

My embodied gratitude sentence:

Part 7: Gratitude and the Fruit of the Spirit

Read Galatians 5:22–23.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control.”
Galatians 5:22–23a, WEB

Choose one fruit of the Spirit you want God to grow in you through gratitude.

☐ Love
☐ Joy
☐ Peace
☐ Patience
☐ Kindness
☐ Goodness
☐ Faithfulness
☐ Gentleness
☐ Self-control

The fruit I most want God to grow in me right now is:

One way gratitude may help this fruit grow is:

Part 8: Christian Gratitude Discernment Prayer

Use the prayer below, or write your own.

Lord, help me see my life as you designed it.

Open my eyes to grace without making me deny pain.

Renew my mind where shame, fear, anger, regret, or resentment have shaped my attitude.

Teach me to receive my life as a gift.

Help me notice one grace today.

Grow in me love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Part 9: Final Reflection

Write one short paragraph about what you noticed during this exercise.

You may write about something hard, something hopeful, something surprising, or something you want to keep practicing.

During this exercise, I noticed:

Simple Practice for This Week
