📝 Worksheet 6.4: Hardship Gratitude Discernment

Course: Christian Gratitude Growth
Topic 6: Gratitude Through Hardship
Connection: This worksheet helps students practice honest hope by naming hardship truthfully, noticing one sign of grace, seeking wise help when needed, and taking one faithful step.

Opening Thought

Christian gratitude through hardship does not mean pretending.

It does not say:

“This does not hurt.”

It says:

“This hurts, but God is near.”

It does not say:

“I should be fine.”

It says:

“Lord, meet me here.”

This worksheet will help you practice Hardship Gratitude Discernment. Move slowly. Be honest. You do not need to force cheerful answers. Begin where you really are.

1. Name the Valley

Write honestly before God.

Right now, one hardship I am facing is:

This hardship hurts because:

The emotions I notice in myself are:
☐ Grief
☐ Anger
☐ Fear
☐ Anxiety
☐ Depression
☐ Regret
☐ Loneliness
☐ Shame
☐ Confusion
☐ Exhaustion
☐ Numbness
☐ Other: _______________________________

A sentence prayer I can pray honestly is:

Example: “Lord, help me.”
Example: “Lord, I am tired.”
Example: “Lord, I do not understand.”
Example: “Lord, stay near to me.”

2. Tell the Truth About What Is Not Okay

Christian gratitude does not call evil good.

Write one sentence of truth.

This situation is not okay because:

Something I should not minimize, excuse, or pretend away is:

One area where I may need wisdom, counsel, protection, or support is:

3. Notice Your Embodied Soul

You are a living soul before God — spiritual and physical together.

Hardship often shows up in the body.

In my body, I notice:
☐ Tight chest
☐ Tiredness
☐ Headache
☐ Restlessness
☐ Numbness
☐ Trouble sleeping
☐ Loss of appetite
☐ Overeating
☐ Racing thoughts
☐ Heavy sadness
☐ Desire to withdraw
☐ Other: _______________________________

One simple body-care step I may need is:
☐ Drink water
☐ Eat something nourishing
☐ Rest
☐ Take a walk
☐ Breathe slowly
☐ Call a doctor or counselor
☐ Tell someone I am not doing well
☐ Step away from a harmful situation
☐ Other: _______________________________

Write it here:

This week, I will care for my embodied soul by:

4. Look for One Sign of Grace

Do not force a long list.

Look for one sign of grace.

One small grace I can notice today is:

It might be:

A breath.
A meal.
A friend.
A Scripture.
A quiet moment.
A tear that became a prayer.
A safe person.
A counselor.
A boundary.
A moment of restraint.
A reason not to give up.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Why might this be a grace from God?

5. Ask for Help Without Shame

Seeking help is not spiritual failure.

Sometimes help is one of God’s gifts.

One burden I may need to stop carrying alone is:

One safe person or resource I could reach out to is:

This could be a trusted friend, spouse, pastor, mentor, counselor, doctor, support group, or appropriate emergency/protective resource.

One sentence I could say to ask for help is:

Example: “I am not doing well, and I need someone to talk to.”
Example: “Could you pray with me?”
Example: “I think I need help making a plan.”
Example: “I need professional support.”

6. Take One Faithful Step

When life feels overwhelming, one faithful step matters.

One faithful step I can take in the next 24–48 hours is:

Keep it simple.

It may be:

Pray one sentence.
Read one Psalm.
Send one text.
Make one appointment.
Take one walk.
Apologize.
Rest.
Ask for prayer.
Eat a meal.
Set a boundary.
Tell the truth.
Receive help.

What might make this step difficult?

What would help me take this step?

7. Remember Resurrection Hope

Christian gratitude is grounded in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Write this sentence slowly:

Christ is risen, and my story is not over.

Now complete this reflection:

Because Christ is risen, I can remember:

One hope I want to hold before God is:

Scripture Reflection

Read this Scripture slowly.

“The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart,
and saves those who have a crushed spirit.”
Psalm 34:18, WEB

What word or phrase stands out to me?

How does this verse speak to my hardship?

What would change if I believed God was near in this valley?

Prayer

Lord,

I come to you honestly.

This hardship hurts.

I do not want fake gratitude.
I do not want to pretend.
I do not want to call evil good.
I do not want to hide from help.

Meet me in this valley.

Open my eyes to one sign of grace.

Give me courage to take one faithful step.

Lead me to wise help where help is needed.

Remind me that Jesus Christ is risen, mercy is real, and my story is not over.

Amen.

Final Reflection

Write one paragraph using these words:

This hurts, but God is near…

Simple Practice for This Week

Each day this week, complete this simple sentence:

Today’s hardship or heaviness is:

One sign of grace is:

One faithful step is:

One hope I remember is:
Christ is risen, and my story is not over.

Closing Reminder

You do not have to force a smile to practice Christian gratitude.

You can bring your tears.

You can bring your confusion.

You can bring your tired body and troubled soul.

Hardship gratitude begins with honest hope:

God is near. Grace is still real. One faithful step still matters.
