Topic 1: What Are PhilMinistry Skills?

🎥 Video 1A Transcript: Christian Philosophy for Whole-Life Discernment

Hi, I am Haley, a Christian Leaders Institute presenter.

A Life Coaching Minister sits across from a young man who says, “I do not know who I am anymore.” He lost his job. His marriage is strained. His church attendance has faded. His body is exhausted. His emotions are raw. His prayer life feels dry.

The leader could answer too quickly.

“Just pray more.”

“Just get a better routine.”

“Just find your calling.”

“Just think positively.”

But PhilMinistry Skills teaches the leader to slow down and see the whole person before God.

PhilMinistry means Christian philosophy brought into ministry practice. It is not philosophy as an abstract classroom subject. It is the skill of helping people think faithfully before God about life, identity, purpose, calling, gender, suffering, justice, relationships, and hope.

The Bible begins with God, not with the self. Genesis 1 teaches that God created the heavens and the earth. Human beings are made in God’s image, male and female, embodied, relational, responsible, and called. That means every ministry conversation is already connected to the big questions of philosophy.

Who is God?

Who am I?

What is real?

What is wrong?

What is good?

What should I do next?

PhilMinistry Skills helps Christian leaders guide those questions with biblical truth, pastoral humility, and practical wisdom.

Roy Clouser helps us ask, “What is being treated as ultimate?” Is the person treating success as ultimate? Approval? Feelings? Biology? Money? Self-expression? Control?

Herman Dooyeweerd helps us ask, “What parts of God’s created reality are being honored, ignored, distorted, or reduced?” Is the leader noticing the person’s body, emotions, relationships, habits, words, responsibilities, faith, and calling?

Ministry Sciences observes that people are rarely helped well when they are flattened into one category. A person is not merely a brain, a body, a trauma story, a social label, a diagnosis, a desire, or a spiritual problem. A person is a whole embodied soul before God.

The Gospel gives what philosophy alone cannot. Christ does not merely clarify our thinking. He redeems sinners, restores the broken, forgives the guilty, comforts the wounded, and raises the dead.

What helps? Ask better questions before giving answers.

What harms? Reducing a complex person to one simple explanation.

A PhilMinistry leader learns to say, “Let’s seek wisdom before God, notice the whole person, and discern one faithful next step.”

That is Christian philosophy for whole-life discernment.
