🎥 Video Transcript: How to Find One Faithful Next Step

Hi, I am Haley, a Christian Leaders Institute presenter.

A chaplain sits with a man named Victor after a workplace blowup. Victor shouted at his supervisor, stormed out, and now fears he may lose his job.

Victor says, “My life is falling apart. Tell me what to do.”

The chaplain knows this is not the moment to solve Victor’s whole life. But it may be the moment to help him take one faithful next step.

PhilMinistry Skills teaches that whole-life discernment should lead to practical action.

The leader asks: What is the whole picture? Then, what is the next faithful step?

Victor’s situation may include anger, lack of sleep, pride, financial fear, workplace injustice, poor communication, family pressure, spiritual discouragement, and old shame. All of that matters. But Victor cannot work on everything at once.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.”

God often gives light for the next step, not the whole map at once.

Roy Clouser helps us ask, “What is Victor treating as ultimate?” Maybe his job has become ultimate. Maybe respect has become ultimate. Maybe control has become ultimate. Maybe his anger feels like protection.

Dooyeweerd helps us ask, “Which aspects need attention right now?” Physically, Victor may need sleep. Lingually, he may need to repair harmful words. Juridically, he may need to take responsibility for wrongdoing. Ethically, he may need humility and love. Faith-wise, he may need to trust God rather than panic.

A wise chaplain might say, “Victor, we cannot solve everything today. But we can take one faithful step. Would you be willing to sleep before making any major decision, pray with me, and tomorrow write a humble message taking responsibility for your part without excusing what may also need to be addressed?”

That is not a total life plan. It is a faithful next step.

Ministry Sciences observes that people often move forward when overwhelming problems are broken into concrete, meaningful steps. The Gospel gives the deeper hope: one step of obedience is not self-salvation. It is a response to the God who meets us with mercy and truth.

What helps is moving from reflection to obedience.

What harms is endless analysis without faithful action.

The takeaway is this: whole-life wisdom does not fix everything at once. It helps a person take the next faithful step before God.
