🎥 Video 3B: Correction as a Path of Life

Hi, I am Haley Steiner, a CLI presenter.

This course is taught by Professor Brian DeCook.

Conflict often includes correction.

Sometimes correction is fair.
Sometimes it is partly fair.
Sometimes it is poorly delivered.
Sometimes it is mixed with misunderstanding.
Sometimes it comes from someone who does not see the whole picture.

Even then, correction can become a place of discipleship.

Hebrews 12 teaches that the Lord disciplines His children for their good, so that they may share His holiness. Discipline is not rejection. In Christ, correction is not humiliation. It is the loving work of a Father who forms His children.

That does not mean every criticism is from God.

Some correction is harsh.
Some is unwise.
Some is manipulative.
Some is false.
Some should be tested carefully.

But a teachable heart asks, “Lord, is there anything here I need to receive?”

The Wildfire hates that question.

The Wildfire says, “Defend yourself immediately.”

The Wildfire says, “They have no right to speak.”

The Wildfire says, “If they were wrong in any way, I do not have to learn anything.”

The Peacefire responds differently.

The Peacefire says, “I can test this before God.”

The Peacefire says, “I can separate tone from truth.”

The Peacefire says, “I do not have to own what is false, but I must not reject what is true.”

The Peacefire says, “Correction may be painful, but it can still become a path of life.”

Proverbs speaks often about receiving correction. A wise person is not someone who enjoys being corrected. A wise person is someone who can receive what is true and grow.

Jesus is gentle and humble in heart. He does not crush His people with shame. But He does transform us. He corrects what destroys us. He exposes what enslaves us. He calls us out of self-protection and into freedom.

So when correction comes, do not receive it blindly. But do not reject it automatically.

Pray.

Listen.

Test it.

Ask trusted believers if needed.

Confess what is yours.

Release what is false.

And return to Christ.

Before moving on, ask: “When I am corrected, do I become defensive, ashamed, angry, dismissive, or teachable?” Then pray, “Lord, give me a heart that can receive truth without being ruled by shame.”
