🎥 Video 9C: The Firebreak: Faithfulness When Reconciliation Is Refused

Hi, I am Haley Steiner, a CLI presenter.

This course is taught by Professor Brian DeCook.

A firebreak is a cleared space that helps stop a fire from spreading.

In this course, a firebreak is a faithful boundary or limitation that reduces further harm when reconciliation is refused, unsafe, or not yet possible.

This is important because Christians sometimes think peacemaking means unlimited access.

But biblical peace is not passivity.

Forgiveness does not mean allowing the same destructive pattern to continue without wisdom.

Love does not mean enabling harm.

Reconciliation requires truth and sufficient safety.

Romans 12:18 says, “If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.”

There are times when we do what is ours to do, and the other person still refuses.

They refuse to listen.

They refuse to tell the truth.

They refuse to repent.

They continue to accuse, threaten, manipulate, gossip, intimidate, or harm.

In those moments, the Peacefire may lead us to build a firebreak.

A firebreak may include limiting conversation topics, changing how communication happens, involving a wise third party, stepping back from a role, documenting serious patterns, refusing private meetings, or seeking pastoral, legal, clinical, or emergency help when needed.

A firebreak is not revenge.

It is not punishment driven by bitterness.

It is not a way to control the other person.

A faithful firebreak says, “I will not add fuel to the Wildfire, and I will not pretend this situation is safe or healthy when it is not.”

Jesus calls us to love enemies, bless those who curse us, and overcome evil with good.

But He does not call us to cooperate with evil.

If violence, coercion, stalking, threats, child abuse, sexual abuse, severe intimidation, or criminal behavior is present, seek appropriate outside help and protection. Pastoral care can be valuable, but it does not replace emergency services, legal protection, mandatory reporting, or specialized care when those are needed.

A firebreak helps us keep our hearts free from bitterness while also walking in wisdom.

We can pray.

We can forgive.

We can bless.

We can refuse revenge.

And we can still say, “This level of access is not faithful right now.”

Before moving on, ask: Is there a relationship where I need to pursue peace, but also build a wise firebreak so the Wildfire does not keep spreading?
