📝 Worksheet 9.5: Build a Faithful Firebreak Plan
📝 Worksheet 9.5: Build a Faithful Firebreak Plan
Purpose
A firebreak is a faithful boundary or limitation that helps stop the Wildfire from spreading when reconciliation is refused, unsafe, or not yet possible.
This worksheet will help you discern:
What belongs to you
What does not belong to you
Whether reconciliation is possible right now
What boundary may be needed
How to build that boundary without bitterness
What next faithful step Jesus is calling you to take
A firebreak is not revenge. It is not punishment. It is not control. A faithful firebreak protects truth, love, wisdom, safety, and obedience to Christ.
Opening Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Bring me into the Peacefire of Your presence. Search my heart. Show me what is mine to own and what I must entrust to You. Protect me from bitterness, fear, revenge, denial, and false guilt. Give me wisdom to pursue peace as far as it depends on me, and courage to build a faithful firebreak if one is needed. Amen.
Scripture Reflection
Read these passages slowly.
Romans 12:18
“If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.”
Proverbs 22:3
“A prudent man sees danger and hides himself; but the simple pass on, and suffer for it.”
Ephesians 4:31–32
“Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.”
What phrase stands out to you?
Why does that phrase matter in your current conflict?
Part 1: Name the Conflict Clearly
Describe the conflict in two or three honest sentences. Avoid exaggeration. Avoid blaming language. Simply name what happened.
What happened?
Who is involved?
What relationship, responsibility, or role has been affected?
What has been damaged?
Part 2: Identify the Wildfire
Mark any Wildfire patterns that are present.
In me, I notice:
☐ Anger
☐ Fear
☐ Revenge
☐ Bitterness
☐ Gossip
☐ Avoidance
☐ Control
☐ Harsh words
☐ Rehearsing the story repeatedly
☐ Wanting the other person exposed
☐ Wanting to punish with silence
☐ Wanting peace without truth
☐ Other: ________________________________________________
What is my strongest Wildfire temptation right now?
In the other person or situation, I notice:
☐ Refusal to listen
☐ Refusal to tell the truth
☐ Blame-shifting
☐ Repeated harmful behavior
☐ Gossip or public accusation
☐ Manipulation
☐ Intimidation
☐ Threats
☐ Unsafe access
☐ No evidence of repentance
☐ Pressure to “move on” without repair
☐ Other: ________________________________________________
What pattern most needs to stop spreading?
Part 3: What Belongs to Me?
Romans 12:18 says, “as much as it is up to you.” This section helps you identify your part.
What words, actions, attitudes, or omissions may belong to you?
Do you need to confess anything without excuse?
☐ Yes
☐ No
☐ I am not sure
If yes, what specifically?
What would repentance look like for you?
What can you do to pursue peace faithfully?
☐ Pray honestly
☐ Refuse gossip
☐ Confess my part
☐ Speak truth gently
☐ Ask for wise counsel
☐ Invite a mediated conversation
☐ Forgive without pretending
☐ Build a boundary
☐ Stop trying to control the outcome
☐ Other: ________________________________________________
Part 4: What Does Not Belong to Me?
You cannot carry another person’s responsibility.
Complete these sentences.
I cannot make this person __________________________________
I cannot force ____________________________________________
I cannot control __________________________________________
I cannot confess __________________________________________
I cannot rebuild trust alone because __________________________
What outcome do you need to entrust to God?
Part 5: Is Reconciliation Possible Right Now?
Answer honestly.
Is the other person willing to tell the truth?
☐ Yes
☐ No
☐ Not sure
Is the other person willing to hear how harm occurred?
☐ Yes
☐ No
☐ Not sure
Is there evidence of repentance or changed conduct?
☐ Yes
☐ No
☐ Not sure
Is there enough safety for a direct conversation?
☐ Yes
☐ No
☐ Not sure
Would a wise third party help?
☐ Yes
☐ No
☐ Not sure
Is trust restored?
☐ Yes
☐ No
☐ Partially
☐ Too early to know
Based on your answers, reconciliation right now seems:
☐ Possible with humility and truth
☐ Possible, but slow
☐ Possible only with help
☐ Not wise yet
☐ Unsafe
☐ Refused by the other person
☐ Unclear
Part 6: Safety Check
Does this conflict involve any of the following?
☐ Violence
☐ Threats
☐ Stalking
☐ Coercion
☐ Sexual abuse
☐ Child abuse
☐ Severe intimidation
☐ Criminal behavior
☐ Ongoing exploitation
☐ Addiction-driven danger
☐ Imminent danger
☐ Vulnerable person at risk
☐ None of these
If any safety concern is present, do not use this worksheet as a substitute for help. Seek appropriate outside help. Pastoral care can be valuable, but it does not replace emergency services, legal protection, mandatory reporting, licensed clinical care, or specialized domestic-violence resources when those are needed.
What safety step may be needed?
Who is a wise, qualified person or resource you should contact?
Part 7: Build the Firebreak
A firebreak is a faithful boundary that helps stop the Wildfire from spreading.
What specific pattern needs to be limited or stopped?
What boundary would help reduce further harm?
☐ I will not continue conversations that include yelling, insults, or threats.
☐ I will move communication to writing.
☐ I will include a wise third party in future conversations.
☐ I will limit the topic of conversation.
☐ I will reduce access for a season.
☐ I will step back from a role or responsibility.
☐ I will document serious patterns.
☐ I will stop discussing this with people who are not part of the solution.
☐ I will seek pastoral, legal, clinical, or emergency help.
☐ Other: ________________________________________________
Write your firebreak in one clear sentence.
Example:
“I am willing to discuss this, but I will not continue the conversation if insults or threats begin.”
Part 8: Check Your Heart
Why do you want this boundary?
☐ To stop harm
☐ To protect truth
☐ To reduce escalation
☐ To create space for repentance
☐ To protect someone vulnerable
☐ To avoid revenge
☐ To obey Christ
☐ To punish the other person
☐ To make the other person feel powerless
☐ To avoid my own responsibility
☐ To control the outcome
If you checked any revenge-based motive, bring that honestly to God.
Lord, I confess that part of me wants:
I release revenge to You. Help me build this firebreak with wisdom, not bitterness. Amen.
Part 9: Communicate the Boundary Simply
Use this structure:
“When __________________ happens, I will __________________. I am still willing to __________________, but I will not __________________.”
Draft your boundary statement.
When ______________________________________________________
I will ______________________________________________________
I am still willing to __________________________________________
but I will not _______________________________________________
Now rewrite it in one simple paragraph.
Part 10: Plan the Next Faithful Step
What is your next faithful step?
☐ Pray before acting
☐ Confess my part
☐ Ask for wise counsel
☐ Communicate the boundary
☐ Invite a mediated conversation
☐ Forgive while keeping a boundary
☐ Seek safety help
☐ Stop feeding gossip
☐ Wait and entrust the outcome to God
☐ Other: ________________________________________________
When will you take this step?
Who should know about this step?
What should remain private?
What would it look like to obey Christ even if the other person refuses?
Part 11: Peacefire Commitment
Complete the statements below.
With God’s help, I will not feed the Wildfire by:
With God’s help, I will pursue peace by:
With God’s help, I will build this firebreak by:
With God’s help, I will entrust this outcome to Him by:
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
I bring this conflict to You. I cannot control another person’s heart, repentance, honesty, or response. I can only offer You my own heart and my next faithful step. Help me forgive without pretending. Help me set boundaries without bitterness. Help me pursue peace without forcing reconciliation. Help me seek safety where safety is needed. Teach me to overcome evil with good, not by my own strength, but by Your presence and power. Amen.
