Worksheet 4.4: Identity Inventory and Christian Hope Statement

Private Worksheet: This worksheet is for your personal reflection. You are not required to upload it or share it with anyone. You may choose to share selected insights with a trusted minister, chaplain, life coach, pastor, counselor, or group leader.

Purpose

This worksheet helps you notice labels that separation or divorce may have placed on you, compare those labels with your identity in Christ, and write a simple Christian hope statement for this season.

You are more than marital status. Divorce may describe part of your story, but it does not name your whole life.

1. Pause and Pray

Take a slow breath.

Place both feet on the floor if you are able.

Relax your shoulders.

Pray slowly:

Lord Jesus,
Help me hear Your voice above shame, fear, rejection, and public opinion.
Teach me to tell the truth about my story without letting divorce define my whole identity.
Remind me that in Christ I am loved, held, and not condemned.
Amen.

You may stop at any time. You may skip any question that feels too much right now.

C. Description or Identity?

Some words describe a real circumstance. But a description is not the same as your identity.

For example, “divorced” may describe a legal or relational reality. But it does not fully define who you are before God.

Complete these sentences:

One real circumstance in my life right now is:

This circumstance is painful because:

Choose one Scripture anchor for your identity statement.

  • Romans 8:1 — There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  • Romans 8:15–17 — In Christ, believers receive the Spirit of adoption.

  • Romans 8:38–39 — Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

  • Colossians 3:1–4 — Your life is hidden with Christ in God.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:17 — If anyone is in Christ, that person is a new creation.

  • Ephesians 2:10 — We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.

The Scripture I want to hold onto is:

In my own words, this Scripture reminds me that:

C. What Is Mine to Own, and What Is Not?

Identity in Christ does not erase responsibility. It also does not allow shame to make you responsible for everything.

Complete what you can.

One thing I may need to own, confess, learn, repair, or grow in is:

One thing that belongs to another person, a pastor, counselor, attorney, court, physician, or other professional is:

Safe Belonging Step

Identity grows best in wise and safe connection.

One trustworthy person or Christian setting where I may take a small step toward safe belonging is:

The step I may take is:

Examples: send a text, attend worship, sit with a trusted person, ask for prayer, meet with a pastor, attend a group, call a counselor, or share one sentence from this worksheet.

Safety and Referral Reminder

Identity language must never be used to silence grief, deny harm, excuse sin, pressure reconciliation, rush forgiveness, or force a cheerful public story.

If your situation includes abuse, coercive control, threats, stalking, violence, child safety concerns, severe distress, self-harm thoughts, substance-related danger, or inability to function in daily life, please seek appropriate emergency, pastoral, legal, medical, or counseling support.

Needing more help is not failure. It is wisdom.
