Worksheet 7.4: Contact Boundary and Difficult-Message Plan

Topic 7 helps you create a faithful-boundary plan, digital-contact guideline, one rewritten difficult message, and a plan for shared community or extended-family contact.

Purpose

This worksheet helps you slow down before reacting, clarify what belongs to you, and prepare communication that is brief, truthful, clear, lawful, and non-escalating.

You do not need to upload this worksheet. It is private unless you choose to share selected parts with a trusted ministry leader, pastor, counselor, attorney, or support person.

1. Pause and Pray

Before answering a difficult message or entering a hard setting, pause.

Take three slow breaths.

Pray:

Lord Jesus, help me guard my heart without hardening it. Help me speak truth without revenge. Help me know what is mine to answer, what is mine to release, and where I need wise help. Amen.

You may stop this worksheet at any time if you feel overwhelmed, unsafe, or unsure. Seek appropriate support when needed.

2. Notice and Name

A. Identify the Repeated Contact Pattern

What contact or setting most often creates confusion, fear, anger, pressure, or escalation?

Check any that apply:

  • Text messages
  • Phone calls
  • Email
  • Parenting app
  • Social media
  • Child exchange
  • School event
  • Church setting
  • Former in-laws
  • Shared friends
  • Holiday or family gathering
  • Legal or financial communication
  • Other: ___________________________

Describe the pattern briefly:

What usually triggers the difficulty?

What do you usually feel before, during, or after this contact?

What do you usually do?

  • Explain too much
  • Defend myself
  • Attack back
  • Freeze
  • Avoid everything
  • Answer too quickly
  • Re-read messages repeatedly
  • Ask others to take sides
  • Post or check social media
  • Give in to keep peace
  • Other: ___________________________

3. Discern and Choose

B. What Belongs to Me?

What is actually mine to answer, do, repair, clarify, or obey?

C. What Does Not Belong to Me?

What belongs to the other person, a former spouse, a court, an attorney, a counselor, a pastor, a doctor, a school, or God?

D. Safety, Legal, and Wisdom Check

Before setting a boundary or sending a message, ask:

Is there any concern involving threats, stalking, coercion, violence, child safety, a court order, legal instructions, self-harm, danger to others, or urgent medical or mental health needs?

Circle one:

Yes / No / Unsure

If yes or unsure, pause before acting alone. Contact the appropriate professional, pastor, ministry leader, legal counsel, emergency service, or safety resource.

What help may be needed?

4. Contact Boundary Plan

Choose one boundary that protects stewardship rather than punishes another person.

The contact situation is:

The boundary I need is about:

  • Time of communication
  • Method of communication
  • Topic limits
  • Tone or insults
  • Legal or financial issues
  • Child-related communication
  • Social media
  • Shared church or community settings
  • Extended family
  • Emotional pressure
  • Safety
  • Other: ___________________________

My boundary sentence:

Write one clear sentence.

Example:
“I will respond to child-related messages between 4 and 5 p.m. unless there is an urgent matter.”

My sentence:

What this boundary protects:

  • Safety
  • Peace
  • Parenting responsibilities
  • Legal compliance
  • Emotional health
  • Spiritual health
  • Truthfulness
  • Rest
  • Work responsibilities
  • Children
  • Other: ___________________________

Who should help me review this boundary before I act?

5. Difficult-Message Rewrite

Choose one message you are tempted to send, or one message you recently sent that could have been shorter and calmer.

Original message or draft:

What is the practical issue that actually needs to be answered?

What accusation, old argument, or emotional hook can I leave unanswered for now?

Rewrite the message in one to three brief, clear, factual sentences:

Before sending, ask:

  • Does this need to be said?
  • Does it need to be said now?
  • Does it need to be said by me?
  • Is this the right channel?
  • Is it truthful?
  • Is it lawful and wise?
  • Does it reduce escalation rather than feed it?

Final decision:

  • I will send it.
  • I will wait.
  • I will ask someone wise to review it.
  • I will not send it.
  • I need professional, pastoral, legal, or safety guidance first.

6. Digital Contact Guideline

Complete the sentences that apply.

For the next seven days:

I will not check:

I will not post:

I will not answer messages after:

I will ask this person to help me think before sending a difficult message:

I will use this channel for necessary communication:

I will avoid this channel because it increases conflict:

7. Shared Community or Extended-Family Plan

Choose one setting that may need a clearer plan.

  • Church
  • Small group
  • School event
  • Sports event
  • Family gathering
  • Holiday
  • Funeral or wedding
  • Former in-law contact
  • Mutual friends
  • Public place
  • Other: ___________________________

The setting is:

What makes it difficult?

What would help me enter this setting with wisdom?

  • Bring a support person
  • Sit separately
  • Arrive late or leave early
  • Prepare one short response
  • Avoid private conversation
  • Stay near safe people
  • Decline the invitation
  • Ask a pastor or leader for guidance
  • Follow legal or safety advice
  • Other: ___________________________

My short response if someone asks for private details:

“Thank you for caring. ____________________________________”

Complete the sentence:

8. One Faithful Step

This week, with God’s help, I will take this one realistic step:

I will do it by this day and time:

The person who can support, review, or pray for this step is:

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, give me wisdom, courage, restraint, and peace. Teach me to set boundaries that protect what You have entrusted to me. Help me speak truth without revenge, communicate clearly without escalating conflict, and seek help when a situation is beyond my role or strength. Amen.
