Video 7B: From Powerless Scripts to Faithful Agency

A powerless script often begins with a sentence that sounds final.

“Nothing I do matters.”

“I have no choice.”

“People always control me.”

“I cannot change.”

“I will always be stuck.”

These sentences may come from repeated disappointment, betrayal, abuse, rejection, failure, or years of being ignored.

They should not be mocked.

They should be noticed with compassion.

But they should also be examined before God.

Faithful agency is the God-supported capacity to make a truthful, responsible, and wise choice within the reality you are facing.

Faithful agency is not total control.

You cannot control another person’s repentance.

You cannot control the past.

You cannot control every emotion.

You cannot guarantee an outcome.

You cannot force trust to return.

You cannot make an unsafe person become safe.

But you may still have a faithful choice.

You may choose to tell the truth.

You may choose to ask for help.

You may choose not to return to danger.

You may choose to obey a court order or follow a safety plan.

You may choose to forgive while maintaining a boundary.

You may choose to stop rehearsing another person’s words as your identity.

You may choose to begin again in one small area.

This is different from self-blame.

Self-blame says, “Everything that happened was my fault.”

Faithful agency says, “What happened may not have been my fault, but I can seek God’s wisdom for what I do next.”

Self-blame carries false guilt.

Faithful agency accepts appropriate responsibility without accepting responsibility for another person’s sin.

The Bible repeatedly shows God restoring people to meaningful participation.

After Peter denied Jesus, Jesus did not define Peter forever by his worst failure. Jesus restored him and gave him a new assignment.

After Elijah became exhausted and afraid, God did not shame him. God gave him rest, food, presence, instruction, and a next step.

When people cried out to Jesus, He listened. He often asked questions. He invited response. He called people to trust, speak, rise, follow, return, or go in peace.

God’s grace does not erase human action.

God’s grace makes faithful action possible.

You can use the WELCOME tool here.

Wake up to the inner conversation.

Examine the script before God.

Locate where the pressure is affecting your spiritual, physical, emotional, relational, or practical life.

Call Scripture into the conversation.

Open to the Holy Spirit.

Move with one faithful step.

Entrust the outcome to Christ.

Suppose the inner script says, “I cannot do anything.”

You might replace it with:

“I cannot control everything, but God can show me one faithful action.”

Suppose the script says, “I have to fix this alone.”

You might say:

“God often provides help through safe people, wise leaders, professionals, and the body of Christ.”

Suppose the script says, “Setting a boundary makes me unloving.”

You might say:

“Love and wisdom can include truthful limits and protection from harm.”

Faithful agency is not loud.

It is often quiet.

It may look like making an appointment.

Writing down what happened.

Leaving a harmful conversation.

Praying before responding.

Completing one task.

Asking someone trustworthy to stand with you.

Your next step does not need to impress anyone.

It needs to be truthful, wise, safe, and faithful.

The powerless script says, “Nothing can change.”

New creation hope says, “I belong to Christ. I can receive help, practice truth, and take the next faithful step.”
