Worksheet 8.4: Temptation Script and Way of Escape Plan

Purpose

This private worksheet will help you notice how temptation develops in your inner conversation and prepare a faithful response before the pressure becomes overwhelming.

You will identify:

  • the situation in which temptation becomes stronger

  • the inward sentence temptation uses

  • the desire or pressure beneath the temptation

  • the false promise being offered

  • the consequence the temptation hides

  • the Scripture truth you want to remember

  • the practical way of escape you can take

  • the support or accountability you may need

This worksheet is private by default.

You are not required to upload it, share intimate details, describe illegal conduct, disclose trauma, or reveal information that may place you or another person at risk.

Use general language when specific details are unnecessary.

Movement One: Pause and Pray

Before examining the temptation, become still before God.

You do not need to hide.

You do not need to condemn yourself.

You do not need to pretend the struggle is unimportant.

Pray slowly:

Lord Jesus, You already know every desire, pressure, thought, habit, and temptation I face. Help me tell the truth without excuses and without despair. Show me the way of escape. Welcome Your Word into my inner conversation and strengthen me through the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Take several slow breaths.

Place your feet on the floor.

Notice that you are present before God in this moment.

Complete this sentence:

Lord, I want to bring this area of temptation into Your light because:

Movement Two: Notice and Name

1. Name the Temptation Generally

Use enough detail to understand the pattern without recording unnecessary private information.

The temptation or recurring pattern I want to understand is:

2. Identify the Vulnerable Situation

Complete the sentence:

I am especially vulnerable to this temptation when:

Possible factors may include:

  • feeling rejected

  • being angry

  • feeling lonely

  • being tired

  • being bored

  • experiencing stress

  • being criticized

  • feeling unappreciated

  • having unrestricted access to a device, substance, person, place, or opportunity

  • being alone at a predictable time

  • remembering a painful experience

  • wanting immediate comfort or relief

3. Locate the Pressure in Your Organic Human Life

Temptation can involve your spiritual, physical, emotional, relational, and practical life.

Spiritually, I notice:

Physically, I notice:

Examples may include fatigue, hunger, restlessness, tension, pain, agitation, or physical craving.

Emotionally, I notice:

Relationally, I notice:

Practically or environmentally, I notice:

Consider access, privacy, time of day, money, location, technology, routines, or lack of accountability.

4. Name the Inner Script

What exact sentence does temptation speak inside you?

Examples:

โ€œJust this once.โ€

โ€œNo one will know.โ€

โ€œI deserve this.โ€

โ€œI cannot handle this feeling.โ€

โ€œThis will make me feel better.โ€

โ€œI have already failed.โ€

โ€œI can confess afterward.โ€

The sentence temptation usually speaks is:

โ€œ________________________________________________________________โ€

5. Identify the Desire Beneath the Temptation

What are you hoping to receive, avoid, control, or escape?

Possible desires include:

  • comfort

  • pleasure

  • relief

  • rest

  • approval

  • acceptance

  • control

  • power

  • revenge

  • connection

  • attention

  • security

  • escape from emotional pain

The desire or pressure beneath this temptation may be:

6. Examine the Promise

What does the temptation promise to give me?

What does the temptation hide from me?

Consider spiritual, emotional, relational, physical, financial, legal, or practical consequences.

What has usually happened when I have believed this promise before?

7. Distinguish Temptation From Identity

Complete these sentences:

This temptation is present, but it does not mean:

This struggle is not my identity because:

In Christ, I am:

Movement Three: Welcome Scripture and the Holy Spirit

1. Examine the Inner Sentence Before God

Write the tempting sentence again:

โ€œ________________________________________________________________โ€

Now ask:

  • Is this sentence fully true?

  • What does it exaggerate?

  • What does it leave out?

  • Where does it lead?

  • Does it agree with the character and commands of God?

  • Does it lead toward love, truth, holiness, wisdom, and life?

What is false, distorted, incomplete, or dangerous about this sentence?

2. Choose a Scripture Truth

Select one Scripture passage or short biblical sentence that speaks directly to this temptation.

Possible passages include:

  • 1 Corinthians 10:13

  • Romans 6:12โ€“14

  • Romans 8:1

  • Romans 12:1โ€“2

  • Galatians 5:16

  • Hebrews 4:14โ€“16

  • James 1:12โ€“16

  • James 4:7โ€“8

  • 1 John 1:9

My Scripture passage is:

The truth I want to remember from this passage is:

3. Create a Short Scripture Sentence

Choose a sentence you can remember when temptation becomes strong.

Examples:

โ€œGod is faithful.โ€

โ€œThere is a way of escape.โ€

โ€œI belong to Jesus Christ.โ€

โ€œThis desire is not my master.โ€

โ€œI can come to the throne of grace.โ€

โ€œI can walk by the Spirit.โ€

โ€œI do not have to agree with this thought.โ€

My short Scripture sentence is:

โ€œ________________________________________________________________โ€

4. Welcome the Holy Spirit

Pray:

Holy Spirit, help me recognize what is happening. Show me what I need to resist, confess, release, receive, or practice. Give me wisdom to recognize the way of escape and courage to take it.

Wait quietly for a moment.

Test any inward impression through Scripture, the character of Jesus Christ, wise counsel, and the fruit it would produce.

I sense that the Holy Spirit is inviting me to:

โ˜ Resist a false promise
โ˜ Confess honestly
โ˜ Receive Godโ€™s grace
โ˜ Leave a situation
โ˜ Set a stronger boundary
โ˜ Ask for support
โ˜ Repair harm
โ˜ Rest or care for my body wisely
โ˜ Remove access to the temptation
โ˜ Practice a new habit
โ˜ Seek pastoral or professional help
โ˜ Other: _______________________________________________

5. Write a Replacement Conversation

Complete this response to temptation:

Temptation says:

โ€œ________________________________________________________________โ€

Scripture reminds me:

โ€œ________________________________________________________________โ€

My renewed response is:

โ€œ________________________________________________________________โ€

โ€œ________________________________________________________________โ€

A possible pattern is:

This temptation is real, but it is not my master. The promise it offers is incomplete. God is faithful. Through the Holy Spirit, I can take the next faithful step.

Movement Four: One Faithful Step

1. Identify the Immediate Way of Escape

First Corinthians 10:13 teaches that God provides a way of escape so that we can endure temptation.

The escape should be practical and specific.

Avoid writing only:

โ€œI will try harder.โ€

Instead, choose an observable action.

Possible actions include:

  • leave the room

  • shut down a device

  • remove an application

  • move into a public area

  • call a trusted person

  • avoid a specific route or location

  • remove access to money, media, substances, or another trigger

  • eat, rest, walk, or care for the body wisely

  • end an unhealthy conversation

  • open Scripture

  • attend a support meeting

  • ask someone safe to remain nearby

  • seek pastoral or qualified professional help

When the temptation begins, my immediate way of escape will be:

2. Make the Step Specific

Where will I go?

What will I stop, close, remove, or leave?

What will I do during the first five minutes?

What Scripture sentence will I speak?

3. Strengthen a Boundary

A boundary reduces predictable access to temptation.

One boundary I need to establish or strengthen is:

I will put this boundary into place by:

Date: ______________________

Action:

4. Identify Safe Support

Choose someone mature, trustworthy, and appropriate.

This person should not shame you, spread private information, participate in the temptation, manipulate you, or pretend to have qualifications they do not possess.

A person I may contact is:

Their relationship to me is:

I will contact this person when:

The message I can send is:

I am facing the temptation we discussed. I am following my escape plan. Please pray for me and check in with me.

My version:

5. Decide Whether Additional Help Is Needed

Check any areas that apply:

โ˜ This pattern is becoming more frequent.
โ˜ I feel unable to control the behavior.
โ˜ The pattern involves substance use or physical dependence.
โ˜ The behavior may harm another person.
โ˜ The behavior involves abuse, coercion, threats, stalking, or violence.
โ˜ The behavior may violate the law or a court order.
โ˜ The pattern involves significant financial harm.
โ˜ The behavior places a child or vulnerable person at risk.
โ˜ The pattern includes self-harm or danger to myself.
โ˜ I need pastoral guidance.
โ˜ I may need counseling or professional treatment.
โ˜ I may need addiction recovery support.
โ˜ I may need medical guidance.
โ˜ I may need legal or safeguarding guidance.
โ˜ None of these currently apply.

The appropriate support or action I need is:

When there is immediate danger, violence, abuse, self-harm risk, child or vulnerable-person harm, or danger to others, use emergency procedures and contact qualified authorities or professionals.

Do not rely only on this worksheet.

6. Prepare for a Setback Without Despair

If you give in to temptation, the next faithful response is not hiding or self-condemnation.

Complete this plan:

If I fail, I will tell the truth to God by saying:

I will contact:

I will take this responsibility or repair step:

I will strengthen this part of my escape plan:

The gospel truth I will remember is:

7. Write Your Way-of-Escape Plan

Complete the full statement:

When I experience _______________________________________________,

and temptation says ______________________________________________,

I will remember _________________________________________________.

My immediate way of escape will be _________________________________

_________________________________________________________________.

I will contact ___________________________________________________.

Through the Holy Spirit, my next faithful step will be ______________

_________________________________________________________________.

My Scripture-Shaped Temptation Statement

Write a short statement you can place in your private Resilient Self-Conversation Portfolio.

Suggested pattern:

My temptation is real, but it is not my identity or my master. I will notice the false promise, welcome Scripture and the Holy Spirit, take the way of escape, and seek wise support. God is faithful, and I can take the next faithful step.

What sentence did temptation use?

When did I first notice it?

What Scripture truth did I remember?

What way of escape did I take?

What helped?

What did not help?

What boundary needs to become stronger?

What support do I need now?

What grace can I thank God for?

Closing Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for meeting me honestly and graciously in this struggle.

Help me recognize temptation before I agree with its false promise. Renew my mind through Scripture and strengthen me through the Holy Spirit.

Give me courage to take the way of escape, establish wise boundaries, and seek trustworthy support. When I fail, lead me toward confession, grace, responsibility, repair, and renewed obedience rather than hiding or despair.

My temptation is not my identity. Sin is not my master. I belong to You.

Help me take the next faithful step. Amen.
