It trains church, Soul Center, and ministry team leaders to:

Ministry Training Outcome

1. Welcome, Prayer, and Topic Introduction — 5 Minutes

Opening Question

Ask the group:

What makes a Christian spiritual conversation feel respectful rather than confrontational?

Allow several brief responses.

Opening Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Rule our hearts as we learn to serve people influenced by Scientology. Give us wisdom to understand, patience to listen, courage to speak truth, and humility to treat every person with respect. Guard us from pride, exaggeration, manipulation, and careless speech. Help us represent you faithfully.

Leader Introduction

Explain:

Topic 1 is not primarily about winning arguments. It establishes the posture needed for every later topic in this course.

Before team members discuss Scientology beliefs, they must learn to listen carefully, describe beliefs accurately, recognize every person as an image-bearer, and communicate the gospel without pressure.

2. Listen Before Answering — 10 Minutes

Read Proverbs 18:13

“He who gives answer before he hears, that is folly and shame to him.”

Read James 1:19–20

“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God.”

Observation Questions

1. What actions are contrasted in these passages?

2. What happens when someone answers before listening?

3. Why does James connect poor listening with anger?

4. What does human anger fail to accomplish?

Interpretation

Listening is not merely a communication technique. It is a biblical discipline.

A Christian outreach worker may possess correct information and still communicate poorly. Interrupting, assuming, exaggerating, or reacting defensively can prevent a meaningful spiritual conversation.

A Scientologist may have experienced Christians who spoke critically without first understanding Scientology or the person’s individual beliefs.

Ministry Application

Ask:

• Do we listen to understand or listen only long enough to prepare an answer?

• Do we assume all Scientologists believe and experience the same things?

• Can we admit when we do not know something?

• Are we willing to ask how a person understands a Scientology teaching?

Practice Question

Each participant writes one respectful listening question.

Examples:

• “What first interested you in Scientology?”

• “What has Scientology meant in your life?”

• “How do you understand spiritual freedom?”

• “Which Scientology teachings are most important to you?”

3. Speak Truthfully and Avoid Caricature — 10 Minutes

Revisit Proverbs 18:13

The passage applies not only to personal listening but also to research.

Christians should not answer Scientology before hearing what Scientology officially teaches and what individual Scientologists actually believe.

Read Colossians 4:5–6

“Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.”

Observation Questions

1. How should Christians behave toward those outside the church?

2. What qualities should characterize Christian speech?

3. Does Paul describe one answer for everyone or knowing how to answer each person?

4. How are wisdom, grace, and truthful answers connected?

Source-Literacy Training

Team members must distinguish among:

• official Scientology teaching

• academic analysis

• journalism

• legal findings

• allegations

• current-member testimony

• former-member testimony

• one individual’s personal beliefs

One source cannot answer every question.

An official source may explain what Scientology teaches but cannot independently prove that every claim is true.

A former member may describe a real personal experience, but that experience should not automatically be attributed to every Scientologist.

Discussion

Evaluate these statements:

Statement One

“Every Scientologist believes exactly the same thing.”

Why is this an overgeneralization?

Statement Two

“One former Scientologist described feeling controlled, so every Scientologist must be controlled.”

Why does this misuse personal testimony?

Statement Three

“Official Scientology sources define the thetan as the person’s immortal spiritual self.”

Why is this a more responsible statement?

Team Standard

identify the source, verify the wording, distinguish teaching from testimony, and avoid presenting one experience as universal.

4. See the Person as an Image-Bearer — 10 Minutes

Read Genesis 1:26–27

“God said, ‘Let’s make man in our image, after our likeness.’”

Observation Questions

1. Where does human worth originate?

2. Is the image of God earned through correct religious beliefs?

3. Does someone lose human value by disagreeing with Christianity?

4. How should this truth affect Christian outreach?

Interpretation

A Scientologist is not merely:

• an evangelistic target

• an argument to defeat

• a source of information

• a potential testimony

• a representative of an organization

• a religious problem

That person may also be a spouse, parent, worker, neighbor, business owner, artist, student, or community leader.

The person may carry fear, hope, grief, responsibility, loyalty, spiritual longing, family pressure, or uncertainty.

Religious identity is important, but it is not the whole person.

Ministry Scenario

A team member says:

“We need to identify the Scientologists in our community and start targeting them.”

Discuss:

1. What is troubling about the word targeting?

2. How could this language shape the team’s behavior?

3. What language would better reflect Genesis 1?

4. How can the team build genuine relationships without hiding its Christian identity?

Leadership Application

Complete the sentence:

Possible responses:

• listen respectfully

5. Share the Gospel With Gentleness and Permission — 10 Minutes

Read 1 Peter 3:15–16

“Always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, with humility and fear, having a good conscience.”

Observation Questions

1. What must first be set apart in the Christian’s heart?

2. What should Christians be prepared to explain?

3. What attitude should accompany the explanation?

4. Why does Peter mention a good conscience?

Interpretation

Christian witness includes both message and manner.

The gospel must be presented clearly, but Christian leaders should not:

• ambush people with religious criticism

• hide their Christian intentions

• manipulate fear

• force prayer

• pressure an immediate decision

• continue after someone asks to stop

• present friendship as a hidden conversion technique

Permission-based ministry is transparent.

A Christian may say:

“My faith in Jesus is important to me. Would you be comfortable discussing how Christianity understands spiritual freedom?”

Gospel Conversation Pattern

Ask

“What has Scientology taught you about spiritual freedom?”

Allow the person to explain without interruption.

“What does salvation mean to you?”

Entrust

The Christian shares faithfully. The Holy Spirit brings conviction and conversion.

Teach us to see current, questioning, and former Scientologists as people created in your image.

Help our church, Soul Center, or ministry become a trustworthy Christian presence in our community.

Give us courage to proclaim that salvation is your gift of grace. You came in the flesh, died for sins, rose bodily from the dead, and offer forgiveness and eternal life.
