Video Transcript 5A: What is Auditing in Scientology?

In Scientology, auditing is a structured spiritual counseling practice. The person receiving auditing is called a preclear. The person conducting the session is called an auditor.

The word auditor is connected to the idea of listening. Scientology teaches that an auditor is specially trained to ask prescribed questions, give precise directions, and guide the preclear through established processes.

Auditing is not presented as an ordinary conversation. It is part of Scientology’s organized path toward greater spiritual freedom.

This helps us recognize an important human longing.

People want someone to listen to them. They want to understand troubling experiences. They want freedom from fear, guilt, confusion, and patterns that seem to control them.

Christians should not mock those longings. Listening can be an expression of love.

James 1:19 says:

“Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger.”

But Christian ministry understands listening differently.

A Christian minister is not a spiritual technician who possesses an exact process for repairing another person. The minister is a servant operating under Scripture, Christian community, and the lordship of Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit is not controlled by a procedure. Spiritual transformation does not come from asking the correct sequence of questions. It comes through the personal work of God.

Christian care also recognizes that human struggles have many dimensions.

A person may be dealing with sin, suffering, grief, bodily exhaustion, painful memories, destructive habits, relational wounds, spiritual confusion, or harm caused by others.

These realities should not all be reduced to one hidden spiritual mechanism.

Christians listen carefully so they can distinguish among confession, compassion, practical wisdom, protection, reconciliation, and professional referral.

Psalm 139:23–24 says:

“Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.”

Notice who performs the deepest searching.

It is God.

A pastor, Soul Coach, chaplain, or Christian outreach worker may ask thoughtful questions. But the leader does not claim to possess an exact spiritual technology that can uncover everything hidden within another person.

When speaking with a Scientologist, you might ask:

“What has auditing helped you understand about yourself?”

Listen respectfully.

Then you might ask permission to explain the Christian difference:

“May I share why Christians believe spiritual freedom comes through knowing Jesus Christ rather than completing a spiritual procedure?”

Christian ministry listens with compassion, speaks truthfully, remains accountable, and points beyond the human helper to Jesus Christ.

The Christian minister is not the savior.

Jesus is.
