Video 4C: The Certified Life Coach: A Non-Ordained Credential

The three pathways introduced in this topic are Christian Leaders Alliance ordination credentials. However, not everyone who studies Christian life coaching is interested in becoming ordained clergy.

For those students, the Christian Development School offers a non-ordained certification credential called the Certified Life Coach.

The Certified Life Coach credential recognizes educational preparation in Christian life coaching. It may fit someone who wants to develop coaching knowledge and skills without pursuing endorsement, local commissioning, clergy standing, or an ordination role through Christian Leaders Alliance.

This credential is part of the Christian Development School. The Christian Development School provides tuition-free courses, Christian Growth Courses, ministry training, certificates, and other adult education credentials within Christian Leaders Institute. It is distinct from Christian Leaders Alliance, which provides ordination and clergy recognition.

According to the current credential pathway, students pursuing the Certified Life Coach credential complete training that includes:

Ministry Coaching Foundations, a one-unit course;

Semi-Directive and Directive Ministry Coaching, a one-unit course;

People Smart for Ministry, a three-unit course; and

Christian Basics: Introduction to Christian Doctrine, a three-unit course.

Students must also meet the credential’s academic requirements, including the required grade-point average and minimum completed units shown in the Available Credentials panel.

This pathway provides meaningful preparation. Students study Christian doctrine, relational wisdom, coaching foundations, and different approaches to ministry coaching. They learn how to listen, ask helpful questions, encourage responsible action, and understand when a more directive ministry approach may or may not be appropriate.

The Certified Life Coach credential is not an ordination credential. It does not provide clergy standing through Christian Leaders Alliance, and it does not authorize someone to practice licensed counseling, psychotherapy, or another regulated profession.

Instead, it recognizes that the student has completed a defined Christian Development School educational pathway.

This option may be especially helpful for someone who wants to use coaching skills in personal development, church volunteering, discipleship, leadership, business, nonprofit service, or another setting where ordination is not necessary.

Some students may begin with the Certified Life Coach credential and remain in that non-ordained role. Others may later discern a calling to pursue the Soul Coach, Ordained Christian Life Coach, or Life Coach Minister pathway.

You do not need to pursue ordination in order for your learning to be valuable. Begin with the credential that fits your present calling, goals, and desired form of service.
