Video 3C: Practicing PEACE When Sleep Will Not Come

What can you do when you are lying awake and sleep will not come?

You can practice PEACE.

P means Prepare the body and place.

Reduce unnecessary stimulation. Lower the light when possible. Attend to physical comfort, basic hygiene, prescribed medications, and reasonable safety needs.

You might choose a quiet hymn, gentle natural sounds, or another familiar adult lullaby.

E means Entrust unfinished things.

You may pray:

“Lord, these matters are unfinished, but they do not all have to be solved tonight.”

Place tomorrow’s responsibilities, decisions, people, and fears before God. Writing down one concern or next step may help you stop carrying it as an emergency.

A means Attend without alarm.

Notice your thoughts, emotions, breathing, muscle tension, and urge to check the clock.

You are not required to like these sensations. Simply name them without immediately declaring danger.

You might say:

“This is worry.”

“This is frustration.”

“This is fear of not sleeping.”

C means Call Scripture, prayer, and song into the night.

Choose one short practice. Slowly repeat Psalm 4:8. Pray a breath prayer such as, “Jesus Christ, give me peace.” Remember one gratitude. Listen to a familiar hymn.

Fellowship with the Holy Spirit is not a technique for forcing sleep. It is communion with God whether you sleep quickly, slowly, or not yet.

E means Ease out of effort.

Say:

“I do not have to produce sleep. I can receive rest. I can allow quiet wakefulness. God remains with me.”

When you remain fully awake for an extended period, and it is safe for you to do so, a calm activity in low light away from the bed may help reduce the connection between your bed and the nighttime struggle. Return to bed when sleepiness grows.

This is general education, not individualized treatment.

PEACE does not guarantee sleep. It gives you a way to stop fighting the night.

In Worksheet 3.4, you will identify your sleep-effort pattern, the sentences that increase alarm, and one Scripture-shaped replacement sentence. You will also build a simple PEACE practice for difficult nights.

You cannot force sleep, but you can prepare wisely, release the demand for control, and rest in the presence of Christ.
