Reading: The Organelle
-A differentiated structure within a cell that performs a specific function
-Can think of them as your organs in your body:
kidneys filter blood and produce urine, stomach digests food, etc
Cell Structure |
City Structure |
Cell Function |
---|---|---|
Nucleus | Town hall |
Where DNA is held; responsible for providing instructions to the cell |
Mitochondria | Power Plant |
Where cellular respiration occurs |
Golgi apparatus |
Post office |
Packages proteins to be delivered |
Endoplasmic reticulum |
Roads/Highways | Synthesized proteins and lipids travel down the endoplasmic reticulum |
Ribosome | Factory | Where proteins are synthesized |
Vesicles/Vacuoles | Garbage dump/storage |
Sac-like materials responsible for getting rid of debris |
Membranes/Cell wall |
City border |
Regulates what goes in and out of the cell |
Cytoplasm | The foundation |
Holds the organelles in place; gives the cell structure |
Chloroplast | Solar energy plant |
Where photosynthesis occurs |
Cytoskeleton | Infrastructure | Also gives the cell structure |
Organelles
-Nucleus
-Mitochondria
-Endoplasmic Reticulum (rough and smooth)
-Golgi Apparatus
-Vacuoles
-Vesicles
-Centrioles
Special Structures of Plant Cells
Cell wall: rigid layer that surrounds the plasma membrane of the plant cell – supports and protects the cell
Central Vacuole: large structure commonly found in mature plants – stores substances and help plant tissues maintain shape
Plastids: Organelles in plants with a variety of functions – for example:
Chloroplasts: photosynthetic organelles
Chromoplasts: make and store other pigments – ie the pigments seen in flower colors
