Scriptures for funerals (compiled by David Feddes)
A funeral service can include
various portions from God's Word, the Bible. Here is a sample of
passages to choose from.
This life is fragile and
fleeting
O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!
(Psalm 39:4)
Psalm 90
Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You
turn men back to dust, saying, “Return to dust, O sons of men.” You sweep men away in the sleep of
death… The length of our days is seventy
years —or eighty, if we have the strength… Teach
us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 103
The
LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in
love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay
us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his love for those who fear him; as
far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are
formed, he remembers that we are dust. As for
man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is
gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting
to everlasting the LORD's love is with those who fear him, and his
righteousness with their children's children.
Ecclesiastes 3
For
everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time
to be born, and a time to die… a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a
time to dance… He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set
eternity in the human heart.
People are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment (Hebrews 9:27).
We are saved through trusting Jesus.
John 3:3, 16
I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again... For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
I am the way
and the truth and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through me. (John 14:6)
Acts 16:31
Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household. (Acts 16:31)
Ephesians
2:8-10
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Eternal life is glad and
glorious
I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. (John 11:25-26)
1 Corinthians 15
20-22 But
Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have
fallen asleep. For
since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through
a man.
For as in Adam all die, so in
Christ all will be made alive... 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death... 42b-44a The body that is sown is perishable, it is
raised imperishable; it
is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is
raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is
raised a spiritual body… 51b-54 For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be
raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself
with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. When the perishable has been clothed
with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is
written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.” ... 57 Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:6-5:10
God, who said, “Let light shine out
of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ… we know that the one who
raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus… Therefore we
do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are
being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving
for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on
what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is
unseen is eternal. Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is
destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built
by human hands. Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our
heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be
found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are
burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our
heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in
the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight. We are
confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with
the Lord. So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the
body or away from it. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of
Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in
the body, whether good or bad.
For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. (Philippians 1:21)
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Brothers and sisters, we
do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do
not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For
we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will
bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According
to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until
the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen
asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven,
with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call
of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that,
we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the
clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore
encourage one another with these words.
Our Savior, Christ Jesus has
destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the
gospel. (2 Timothy 1:10)
Revelation 21:1-4; 22:1-5
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the
first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any
sea.
2 I saw the Holy City, the new
Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully
dressed for her husband. And
I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with
men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will
be with them and be their God. He
will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning
or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” … The throne of God and
of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They
will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There
will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of
the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever
and ever.
God cares and
comforts us
The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. (Deuteronomy 33:27)
Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
The
LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves
those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. (Psalm 147:3)
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (Matthew 5:4)
Do
not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not
so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place
for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will
come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am
going."
Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are
going, so how can we know the way?" Jesus answered, "I am the way
and the truth and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through me." (John 14:1-6)
2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Blessed be the God
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all
comfort,
who comforts us in all our
affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction,
with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
I will never leave you nor forsake you. (Hebrews 11:5)
Romans 8:37-39in all these
things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am
convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither
height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
