Video Transcript: Effective Body Language

In this topic, we're going to talk about effective body language, a very important topic for a pastor. And in some ways when you're in front of people, people look at you and they hear what you say. But they see how you communicate what you say with your body language. So this is a very important presentation topic that you need to take very seriously. Well, let's talk about body language, in many ways, body language is a an acquired skill in public speaking, a lot of times when you're just casual speaking, your body language is just developed naturally for who you are. And if you can sort of get your body language to be so transferable with, but with just a little extra, that's probably where your body language would be best. How do you get your body language and that skill to be at that level? So when you're preaching, it's there?

Well, first of all, don't worry about being like a great communicator overnight. Because it's born out of practice, and confidence, the more practice and the more confidence you have, the better your body language skills will become. Secondly, your body language skills are very much connected to your personality, if you're more low key, and then when you preach, you're like the total opposite people, like he's more low key. So low key people, they body language too, but it's more subtle, and the way they use their hands, it's authentic, but it's connected to their personality. Now, I want to tell you this that one of the dangers here is to sort of say, Well, I'm just a subdued person, I can challenge myself to turn the notch up in my body language. And I want to discourage you from just saying I am who I am. I'm not gonna learn anything from this message this week. Because really, you have to push yourself to exceed your comfort level. When anyone starts doing public speaking, there's a certain comfort level, a perceived comfort level, a rut, so to speak, they're in and how they see themselves, but body language, in speaking is something that you just have to take some chances and take the next step in doing. Effective body language in preaching is something that's been studied Art Wallis of Center point, Road Church senior pastor has given us excellent tips that you're going to read about. And you're going to look at some of the interesting observations about body language that Art Wallis has given in your in read through his tips, and there's something that I'm sure will help you out a lot.

Also, David Aken, we have his class notes online that we have selected free to look at, if you're going to look at some of the best practices on body language. Also, we're gonna look at a presentation that I'm doing later on in this topic on hand gestures and preaching, using your hands. We're very much onto that this week. And we're going to look at like Billy Graham, and how he uses his hands and how we you can learn how to use your hands for more effective communication. We're also going to survey international experts, Andrew Bryant and Karen Freeman, to people that have a lot to say about body language, and communicating to a congregation. And then finally, you're going to enjoy a sermon from Billy Graham from 1981, really at his pinnacle of communication. And while you're watching this sermon, just take note of how he uses his hands from the whole message. So today, we are going to look at body language and how God can utilize your body language and including your hands to be very effective in communicating the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
