Self-Care and Recovery (Domestic Tranquility) (3 credits)Instructor: Dr. Mark Vander Meer

Overview: This course provides students with a Biblical framework for learning and developing Godly, healthy living skills that promote self-care and community support. Students will learn the foundations of the 12-step recovery process, best practices of conflict management, and how to manage one’s dark side. Students will also survey the fundamentals of healthy relationship skills in personal and professional sectors, learn and apply love languages, God-given temperament patterns, and how to go from the self to community in the context of the church.Course Outcomes:
- Learn the foundations of personal spiritual health and wellness in the context of Scripture.
- Learn and apply the 12-steps of recovery and its full process as originated from Scripture.
- Learn and apply Bible-based conflict management principles and best practices.
- Discover the dark sides of life and leadership and how God uses them to shape and form the Christian believer.
- Understand healthy community life via the church in the context of Scripture, the 12 steps of recovery, and daily moral inventory.
The expectation of you in this class:- Read all online articles and book excerpts.
- Watch online video lectures for each unit. In addition to videos from Dr. Mark Vander Meer, you will see various videos of Christian scholars and practitioners from several disciplines addressing various topics to best illustrate, learn and apply key concepts.
- Use the discussion forum to ask questions and exchange ideas with others.
- Take the online quiz for each unit. You will have to answer 20 multiple-choice questions for each quiz. Once a quiz starts, you must finish it and can't retake it. So be ready ahead of time. Each quiz covers readings and video lectures for that unit. While taking the quiz, you may use your notes and refer to articles and other materials. Tip: First, answer all the questions you know. Then try to look up answers to questions you don't know. When you have entered an answer for every question, submit the quiz for grading before the 45-minute limit.
Assignments: View all online lectures and read all articles on each topic. CLI computer tracks whether you do this. After viewing all lectures for the unit, take the quiz based on the lectures (100% of grade).
Grading Scale:
A 95-100% A- 90-94% B+ 87-89% B 83-86% B- 80-82% C+ 77-79% C 73-76% C- 70-72% D+ 67-69% D 63-66% D- 60-62% F 0-59%
Your average for the course must be at least 60%. Otherwise, you will fail the class and will receive no credit.Deadline: You have 180 days to finish the course. Complete all assignments before the final deadline, or you will be automatically unenrolled, and all coursework will be removed. You will have to start over and take the class again to receive credit.
