Introduction to Self-Care and Recovery
-
Domestic Tranquility is a course that explores the full extent of the human experience from the Christian worldview in regard to body, mind and spirit and how it translates into human behavior.
You are REQUIRED to read the message on Sanctification as written by Dr. John Piper. This is a foundational text for TOPIC 1. All of the content specified will be on the quiz as it complements the introductory content delivered by Dr. Mark.
-
Biblical and Theological Foundations
Our second topic addresses the Biblical and Theological foundations of self-care, wellness and how these contribute to domestic tranquility over chaos.
Self-Care begins with understanding why we were made to be human.

Introduction to Personal Dark Sides
In this session we will introduce the Dark Sides we ALL deal with and how to address them. The Dark Sides are summarized in five expressions that we will discuss and study in the next five sessions including this one. The five Dark Sides are: 1) Compulsivity; 2) Co Dependency; 3) Paranoia; 4) Narcissism; and 5) Passive Aggressive behavior. All of these "Dark Sides" are what we refer to as shadow sides of what drives us to get what we want and for success in anything. The goal of this portion of our Domestic Tranquility study is to identify where we are within these five Dark Sides since we all deal with them on a daily basis. As a result, we exercise better self awareness and self care in our Lord Jesus Christ as we become more like Him.
We will walk through the Dark Side of Leadership power point to cover all of the dark sides, their effects, the Biblical solutions and the Profile that will be posted for you to take.
Regarding The DARK SIDE PROFILE:
There are three PDF files attached that provide all three pages of the DARK SIDE PROFILE. This is the Profile I referred to in the Video as I covered the Overview of the Dark Sides.
The Dark Side Profile is for you to download, print, and fill out to determine where YOU are at in each of the five Dark Sides as defined by the Overcoming the Dark Side of Leadership Book by McIntosh and Rima. The PowerPoint presentation on the Dark Sides is based on this book.
Regarding how to use the Profile, follow the directions on the handout once printed; it is self explanatory.
The purpose of this profile is to shed light on where you are in your spiritual, emotional and mental places.
As stated previous, this is a HANDS ON, PRACTICAL course that is Bible based and Christocentric and delivers well researched material. The Dark Sides study is to help you in every sphere of life from work to home.
This Profile is meant to give you a self-check so that if you need to get help, you understand why. I also invite you to use this tool in your ministry to help others discover where they are and to continue to work on themselves.
NOTE: NONE of the material on this Profile is on the Quiz. However, I provide this Profile for your personal benefit and spiritual growth.
REGARDING JOURNALS: In the Videos I mention journals. This too is meant for you to do as a spiritual discipline similar to the Dark Side Profile; may God bless you as you work on your walk with Him via this course. Also: There is nothing journal related in any of the quizzes in this course.

Dark Side: Compulsivity/Control & Codependency
In this session we explore the definition of the shadow or Dark Side of Control/Compulsivity and Codependency. We will look at its definition, the causes, and how this Dark Side fuels unhealthy thinking, choices inter and intra-personal behavior.
Regarding The DARK SIDE PROFILE (Repeated from the previous topic):
There are three PDF files attached that provide all three pages of the DARK SIDE PROFILE. This is the Profile I referred to in the Video as I covered the Compulsivity/Control & Codependency Dark Side.

Regarding how to use the Profile, follow the directions on the handout once printed; it is self exclamatory.
The purpose of this profile is to shed light on where you are in your spiritual, emotional and mental places.

Dark Side: Paranoia
What are we scared of as we engage in work, family or other interpersonal relationships? Who seems to be talking about you? Why? What issues could be so serious that "everybody" is talking about you? The third Dark Side we look at in this session is the Dark Side of Paranoia. We will define it, look at it how it affects all of us in context and explain how to address it with God's help.
-
Dark Side: Narcissism
In the Charles Schulz comic strip Peanuts, Charlie Brown is pictured reading a book on the sun, and the earth to Lucy. Charlie reads, "And the Earth revolves around the sun..." and Lucy interrupts him saying, "The world revolves around the sun? I thought the world revolved around ME!"
Lucy's comment is the mantra of Narcissism; it is all about you and no one else. In this session, we will examine how we all have moments where we think that it is all about ourselves and can never imagine thinking about others. In spite of someone's Christian talk, this is a major issue that Christian believers do not recognize and deny in their thinking and behavior. Someone may acknowledge, love and follow Jesus but miss how he or she may in fact think that everyone needs to heed their opinion, position, and/or personality. Nothing can be further from the truth. Narcissism is a common disorder and sin that everyone in the world needs to eradicate.
-
Dark Side: Passive Aggressive
Have you ever had someone resist your request to accomplish a task even though on the outset it was completely legitimate? Passive Aggressive behavior employs such resistance and negative behavior that goes along with it. In this session, the final Dark Side we examine is how we all can fall into a pattern of resisting doing what an authority figure, a good friend, or spouse asks us to do as a favor, task or directive. Again, we will explore how to Biblically address this behavioral pattern and to become more like Christ.

Temperament: God's Design
In this session, we discover what the five temperaments are based on Scripture, how they help us to understand and diffuse domestic issues, and bring peace to inter and intra-personal relationships.
-
Addictive Behavior
After defining and examining the Dark Sides, we now come into the topic of Addictive Behavior; what it is, where it comes from, and how we all can deal with it. God's Word provides clear answers and strategies in overcoming addictive behaviors for all times.
-
Re-entry
This session tackles the topic of re-entry; not only is it addressing re-entry from jail or prison back into "normal" life as we know it, but it is also addressing re-entry from addictive behaviors, self-destructive life choices and the like. To those taking this course who have been incarcerated prior, this is the topic that will hopefully help you to process your current situation. For those of you who have never been incarcerated, this will shed light onto what the process can be like and what we can learn and apply to our own re-entering into life as God wants it to be.
-
Healthy Marriage
Last session we looked at social issues such as crime, drug abuse and the like. It has been cited that the dissolution of the family is the beginning of the decline of a society. The truth is that if marriages can be healthy, supported by the community at large and thrive in spite of social forces that fight their integrity, then there can be healthier relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children and family to family in the context of community.

Healthy Singleness
Similar to the Healthy Marriage, we also want to examine and apply what we can learn about healthy, God honoring singleness in life. Domestic tranquility looks at healthy single life as well as married life; it is the WHOLE human experience that we need to try to grasp as God has created it to be. Whole yet broken people love God and love others; the question is how? There are challenges unique to single people that married people do not understand; with God's help in this session we can grasp what the Bible tells us on productive, healthy single living. Yes, we will not be able to cover it all, but we will be able to cover enough to understand and continue to love one another as God has loved us.
-
Thriving Through Ministry Conflict
In this session, we will look at the art of Biblical conflict management in order to maximize personal effectiveness.
-
Recovery and the church
Recovery and the church is a broad topic, however, we will discuss and examine:
1. How the church has not embraced "addiction recovery" and why it has (and still tends to be) been in denial.
2. The stigma projected on recovering people in the church and what barriers this creates.
3. Why mental health is avoided by church people and what needs to change.
4. The Biblical and theological foundations of recovery in the church and why it needs to be the main approach to speaking to people and their needs.
Overall, this topic will open your eyes to how there has been a disconnect between the church and recovery and to examine what steps are needed to take to normalize and streamline recovery ministry in the church.
-
Creating a Community of Recovery
In this final session, we will look at how you can work with God's people to create a community of recovery. The culmination of this course is for us to integrate the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the biblical knowledge of self awareness and care and the community of Christ. We need the coming together of everyone in the Christian community for the purpose of establishing and sustaining a daily healthy community experience. As we have learned, this begins with admitting our issues, addictions, short comings and the like. The more that we can be honest, up front and truth tellers in love, the more that we can love the Lord our God with all of our heart, mind and strength, and our neighbors as we love and care for ourselves.

Putting God at the center brought peace to her home and marriage!
CLI Student Jamie Welch
"I moved to Los Angeles California when I was 18 years old to pursue an acting career. I ended up with a few small roles in shows like General Hospital and How I Met Your Mother, but nothing substantial. Four years later, I came to a crossroads. My husband and I fell in love. However, he was moving across the country a few months after we started dating. At this point, I was the closest I had ever been to a leading role in a pilot series. I went through many auditions, callbacks, chemistry testings, and network testings. I asked God to help me decide if I was going to stay in California or move to Virginia to be with my love. Ultimately, the pilot canceled, and I moved to Virginia.
Our relationship had its share of good times and bad. It was complicated by him having a five-year-old son that he had full custody of. Five months after I moved back, we got engaged and married seven months after that. We attended New Life Church where my husband's family attended for years. We took a marriage class through the church called Love & Respect. Additionally, at this time, I volunteered in the infant room during Sunday services. We stayed there for many years. After we had our first daughter who is now three, the dynamic of the church changed which led me away from it.
I finally found my new church home, Lifepoint Church. We are a small location meeting out of a high school that is a part of a larger network church. In January, I decided to recommit my life to Jesus, a person I have always known but drifted from for some time. I immersed myself in the teachings of our Pastor, began unpacking the Bible page by page and joined a small group. This small group included me and five other women that met for about three months. We went through a process called Freedom and attended a weekend conference at its conclusion. During those weeks, chains broke and weights lifted. Praying with people became the norm for me.
Throughout that process and especially after, things in my household really began to shift. A marriage and a household that I was pretty hopeless about did a complete turnaround. Our middle child was very sick for months and months contributing to a large portion of our marital stress, but things were getting better. However, the best part was my husband praying with me about our daughter; it was a pivotal moment for us. Putting God back at the center of our marriage is the difference this time. There are light and peace in our home that was missing for many years."
