  • Biblical Greek I (4 credits)

    Overview: This is the first in a sequence of three courses on the basics of New Testament Greek, laying a foundation for studying the New Testament in its original language. (Note: Greek is hard for most people. Usually, it is best to take Greek only after you have successfully completed some other CLI classes.)


    Course Outcomes:

    1. Learn the Greek alphabet and pronunciation
    2. Learn how some English grammar basics correlate to Greek grammar
    3. Learn cases and uses for first and second declension Greek nouns, adjectives, and personal pronouns
    4. Learn inflection of present active, present middle/passive, and future Greek verbs
    5. Learn the vocabulary of Greek words that appear most frequently in the New Testament
    6. Learn where to access some of the most helpful online tools for studying the Greek New Testament
    7. Learn some examples of how knowledge of Greek offers deeper, more accurate insight into the meaning of God’s truth in the New Testament.


    Required Resources: All required material for this course is here online. Mastering New Testament Greek by Dr. Ted Hildebrandt includes textbooks, workbooks, and video presentations. 


    Assignments:

    1. Study the material for each unit.
    2. Take the online quiz for each unit. The quiz is your opportunity to prove that you learned Greek for that unit. On each quiz, you will have 90 minutes to answer 40 multiple-choice questions. Once a quiz has started, you must finish it, and you can't retake it. So be ready ahead of time.

     
    *The course has a total of 500 points: 40 points per quiz, except that quiz 11 covers an extensive review and is worth 60 points.


    Grading Scale:


    A 95-100%   A- 90-94%   B+ 87-89%   B 83-86%   B- 80-82%   C+ 77-79%   C 73-76%   C- 70-72%    D+ 67-69%   D 63-66%   D- 60-62%   F 0-59%


    Your average for the course must be at least 60%. Otherwise, you will fail the class and will receive no credit.

    

    Deadline: You have 180 days to finish the course. Complete all assignments before the final deadline, or you will be automatically unenrolled, and all coursework will be removed. You will have to start over and take the class again to receive credit.


    Course Forum: Each course forum is at the beginning of the course, right before the first-course content section, and has comments and questions from other students in the class. The forum is a great way to post a question or comment for other students who are currently enrolled in the course to see. Additionally, you can search the forum to see if anyone in the past has addressed or discussed the issue, question, or comment you wanted to post about.


    NOTE: Greek is very hard for most students and takes more time than other classes. So start the class as soon as possible, and stay ahead of schedule to allow yourself extra time.
