Missions and Revivals (4 credits)

Overview: This class looks at the mighty things the Holy Spirit has done at various times and places, causing the church to grow in holiness, power, and numbers. By examining major mission advances and revivals, we gain insights into mission and revival in our own time and place.
Course Outcomes:
- Know and rejoice in Christian history's significant missionary advances and revival movements.
- Learn essential lessons from revivals in different eras, nations, and cultural settings.
- Develop a biblical understanding of revival.
- Become more eager and expectant for the Holy Spirit to do mighty things here and now.
- Seek to become a Spirit-empowered revival leader who has learned from the accomplishments and errors of leaders in earlier generations.
Required Reading: (All provided here online, so no book purchase is necessary.)
- Elmer Towns and Douglas Porter, The Ten Greatest Revivals Ever: From Pentecost to the Present. Selected chapters are assigned.
- Bruce Ballast, Ordinary People, Extraordinary Things: How God Brings Revival. This book focuses on revivals in the United States and draws lessons from those events. Units 5-9 of this course focus on Dr. Ballast's book, accompanied by video lectures from Dr. Ballast.
- Various articles, mainly from the archives of Christian History magazine and offered in partnership with Christian History. These articles show the Spirit's work in many cultures.
Required Assignments:
- View all online lectures and read all articles on each topic. Active engagement with course materials prior to attempting the quiz is required for each unit. If a resource is provided in multiple formats, simply choose whichever format best supports your learning. CLI’s system tracks your viewing history to determine meaningful engagement. Make sure you are logged into your student account when viewing or downloading the materials.
Take the online quiz for the first eleven units. You will have 60 minutes to answer 15 multiple-choice questions for each quiz. Each quiz covers the readings and video lectures for that unit. Once a quiz has started, you must finish it, and you cannot retake it.
Quizzes must be completed independently. The use of AI tools, search engines, other websites, or assistance from other individuals is prohibited.Quiz Tip: First answer the questions you know. Then use your own notes or the provided CLI course materials to help answer any questions you are unsure about.
Quizzes are open-note. You may reference your own notes or any of the provided CLI course materials during the quiz. However, you should plan to study materials prior to attempting the quiz.3. Write a 2-3 page single-spaced paper (800-1,000 words) for unit 12. This paper should sum up your discoveries in this course and describe action steps on how you plan to seek revival and spread Christianity in your setting. Don't just hastily write this paper during unit 12. Instead, make a few notes from each unit of things that impressed you in your studies for that unit: helpful insights that struck you, encouraging examples of the Spirit's work in heroes of faith, and ideas for pursuing ministry and revival in your own setting. In unit 12, take all your notes from the first 11 units, select those that you find most valuable, pray for the Holy Spirit's leading, and put together a 2-3-page paper summarizing key lessons you've learned and action steps you plan to take. The paper counts for 35 points. The principal value, however, is your discoveries and action plans, not the grade.4. At the end of the course, you will be invited to complete a brief Course Feedback Survey. Your feedback helps CLI evaluate the course and identify opportunities for improvement.Course ForumEach course forum is located near the beginning of the course, immediately before the first course-content section. The forum allows students to post course-related questions and comments for other currently enrolled students to view and discuss. You can also search previous posts to see whether your question or topic has already been addressed.
The forum is intended primarily for peer discussion and may not receive an immediate response. Questions or concerns requiring timely assistance should be directed to the Help Desk at helpdesk@christianleaders.net.
Grading Scale
A 93-100% A- 90-92% B+ 87-89% B 83-86% B- 80-82% C+ 77-79% C 73-76% C- 70-72% D+ 67-69% D 63-66% D- 60-62% F 0-59%
Students' final grade is based on the average of all required quizzes and assignments. Each graded activity is weighted equally unless otherwise stated. The single lowest quiz score will be excluded from the overall grade.
Your average for the course must be at least 60%. Otherwise, you will fail the class and will receive no credit.
Deadline
You have 180 days to finish the course. If you have not received a final grade for the course before your enrollment ends, you will be automatically unenrolled, you will receive an “Administrative Withdrawal” for the course on your transcript, and all coursework will be removed. You will have to start over and take the class again to receive credit.
To avoid potential administrative delays or additional fees, please complete all assignments at least three weeks before your enrollment end date.

This paper is worth 35 points, accordingly:

Final comments:
- Submission: Papers may take 1-2 weeks to be graded. Make sure to submit this paper at least two weeks before your enrollment date ends.
- Plagiarism: Make sure you have read the CLI PLAGIARISM POLICY before you write this paper.
- When graded, if you are asked to rewrite your paper, you will have only one more chance to do it. Papers that need to be rewritten will have an automatic 10 points deducted from the total score of the paper. Be sure you take advantage of the first and second chance to get a good grade!
