Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27 New Living Translation)

Participating

Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! (1 Cor 9:24)

Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1)

Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (James 1:22)

Hero worship

Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1,2)

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1)

Eyes on the prize

So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. (1 Cor 9:24-25)

I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness. (2 Tim 4:7)

I want to know Christ… becoming like him… I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me…  Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:10-14)

Training

All athletes are disciplined in their training… I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. (1 Corinthians 9:25, 27)

Training in
 righteousness

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Train to be godly

Train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. (1 Timothy 4:7-8)

Confident but not cocky

I labor, struggling with all Christ’s energy, which so powerfully works in me. (Col 1:29).

I discipline my body like an athlete, lest

after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:27)

Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you. (Phil 2:12-13)
