Ministry Coaching Foundations (1 Credit)
Professor: Steve Elzinga and Henry Reyenga
Course description: This course introduces students to the heart, mindset, and methods of Christian ministry coaching as a biblical, Spirit-empowered, and people-focused calling.
Overview
This foundational course introduces students to the heart, mindset, and methods of Christian ministry coaching. Designed for aspiring Ministry Coaches within the Christian Leaders Institute and Alliance pathways—or other Spirit-led ministry contexts—this 15-topic course explores coaching as a biblical, Spirit-empowered, and people-focused calling.
This course affirms that ministry coaches are not professional, licensed coaches, but ministers who coach. Coaching in this context includes non-directive, semi-directive, and directive approaches, applied according to the client’s openness, needs, and God’s guidance. Ministry Coaches respect that the client determines the coaching approach, while the Holy Spirit leads the coach in how best to support transformation.
Students will explore how ministry coaching is applied in real-life settings—churches, Soul Centers, families, and small groups—often as volunteers or part-time ministers. The course also equips full-time Christian leaders who desire to develop coaching as a ministry competency. This is not a secular certification course, but a formation experience for Spirit-filled servant leaders called to walk alongside others in truth, grace, and growth.
Each of the five sections includes three core video presentations by Steve Elzinga and Henry Reyenga, three recommended readings, and a reflection or practice assignment. Upon completion, students will be prepared to move into specialization courses such as Identity Coaching, Romance Coaching, or Life Coaching Ministry.
✅ Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Articulate a biblical and theological foundation for Christian ministry coaching, drawing from Scripture and Ministry Sciences to explain why coaching is a vital expression of servant leadership.
- Discern their personal calling as a Ministry Coach, reflecting on spiritual motivation, humility, and the relational posture of coaching in the footsteps of Jesus.
- Demonstrate core coaching skills, including Spirit-led active listening, asking powerful and purposeful questions, and providing grace-filled guidance without assuming the role of fixer.
- Distinguish coaching from counseling and discipleship, and recognize when to integrate or refer based on the client’s needs and spiritual direction.
- Structure and lead a full coaching session, including building trust in the first meeting, flowing with intentionality, and knowing when and how to end, redirect, or refer.
- Incorporate prayer, Scripture, and discernment into coaching conversations, inviting the Holy Spirit to guide the process while honoring the client’s voice and agency.
- Apply non-directive, semi-directive, and directive approaches appropriately, based on the client’s readiness, the relational context, and spiritual wisdom—always empowering the client to lead their own transformation.
- Respect boundaries and uphold ethical integrity in coaching ministry, practicing self-awareness, confidentiality, and accountability as a spiritual leader.
- Understand the roles and opportunities of ministry coaching in churches, Soul Centers, families, and online or local ministry contexts, especially as a volunteer or part-time minister.
- Equip others by modeling and multiplying coaching ministry, laying the groundwork for training additional ministry coaches through the Christian Leaders Alliance and Institute pathways.
